WEDNESDAY’S STATEWIDE GIRLS SOCCER DISTRICT ROUNDUP Mona Shores edges Reeths-Puffer on late Norden goal; Stevenson ousts Northville in shootout



MUSKEGON, Mich. – After tying Muskegon Reeths-Puffer 1-1 early in the 2024 campaign, Muskegon Mona Shores was able to oust its arch-rival Rockets in a Division 1 pre-district Wednesday, 1-0.

 

The Ottawa Kent Conference-Green Division champions scored the game winner with just 3:42 left in regulation to prevail.

 

Corralling a pass from junior midfielder Ava Freye, senior forward Shay Norden, who is headed to Calvin University next school year, slipped in a close-range shot and the Sailors defense made it stand down the stretch, as Mona Shores (16-2-2) advanced to next week’s district semifinals against fellow state-ranked Rockford.

 

Ella Kinney, Annie Zambon, Mal Hogston and Addison Fisher aided the defensive effort and senior Jersey VanderWall recorded her 11th shutout of the season on just two saves. The Sailors outshot Reeths-Puffer 14-2.

 

MORE DIVISION 1

 

LIVONIA STEVENSON 2, NORTHVILLE 1 (2OT, SO): Stevenson ventured into a shootout before prevailing over the Mustangs. Kylie Dean scored for the Spartans (15-2-1) in regulation and in a shootout for Stevenson, which held a 4-3 edge in penalties to advance to next week’s district semifinals. Northville (11-7-3) was a state runner-up two years ago and a state semifinalist last season.

 

WYANDOTTE ROOSEVELT 4, LINCOLN PARK 0: Ava Miknyicki netted the hattrick and Wyanodotte cruised to this pre-district triumph. Amelia Grenz also scored for the Bears (11-9-1) and Bianca Hawthorne recorded the shutout in goal.

 

DETROIT WESTERN 7, DETROIT CASS TECH 0: Detroit Public School League champion Detroit Western defeated Cass Tech for the third time this season in this Division 1 pre-district contest.

 

DEARBORN FORDSON 2, DEARBORN EDSEL FORD 0 (2OT): Sarrina Ajami recorded the shutout and Malak Khoucheich and Sarah Zorkot each scored a goal in the two overtime periods to lift the Tractors (7-9-1) to the pre-district win.

 

WESTLAND JOHN GLENN 3, WAYNE MEMORIAL 1: John Glenn tripled up local rival Wayne in this D-1 district opening battle of KLAA-East foes.

 

DEARBORN 16, TAYLOR 0: Dearborn scored early and often in this Division 1 pre-district victory over the Griffons.


WOODHAVEN 6, DEARBORN HEIGHTS CRESTWOOD 0: Woodhaven made sure that Crestwood would not win another district trophy this season, taking down Crestwood in this D-1 pre-district.

 

SALEM 2, PLYMOUTH 1: Of the many crosstown rivalry games in Wednesday’s pre-districts across Michigan, Salem escaped with this narrow 2-1 victory over the Wildcats.

 

LIVONIA FRANKLIN 4, LIVONIA CHURCHILL 1: Sophomore Emma Nichols scored the hattrick and Franklin took down city rival Churchill in this pre-district contest featuring KLAA-East foes.

 

ANN ARBOR PIONEER 5, ANN ARBOR HURON 0: The Pioneers put up a five-spot on district rival and Southeastern Conference-Red Division foe Huron Wednesday night in this pre-district battle in Ann Arbor.

 

CLINTON TOWNSHIP CHIPPEWA VALLEY 5, PORT HURON NORTHERN 0: After not recording a single win in 2023, Chippewa Valley moved to 8-6-1 overall with this clean sheet in the Division 1 state tournament.

 

UTICA 2, UTICA FORD 1 (2OT): After tying Utica Ford twice inside Macomb Area Conference-White Division play, Utica got the upper hand in this D-1 pre-district contest. Grand Valley State-bound Sarah Fromm scored with 6:53 remaining in the second overtime period to lift the Chieftains at Sterling Heights Stevenson. Fromm also scored with 6:21 remaining in the first half. Lilah Earl headed home a cross from Kylee Pfeifer with 5:31 left in regulation to force overtime for the Falcons (9-5-4).

 

WARREN COUSINO 14, WARREN MOTT 0: The Patriots scored early and often in this Division 1 pre-district win over Woods-Tower.

 

STERLING HEIGHTS STEVENSON 8, STERLING HEIGHTS 0: Presley Jones and the Titans recorded this mercy-shortened pre-district victory over local rival Sterling Heights.

 

FRASER 8, ROSEVILLE 0: Fraser recorded this mercy-shortened district opening win Wednesday over Roseville.

 

ROYAL OAK 8, FERNDALE-FERNDALE UNIVERSITY ACADEMY UNIFIED 0: Ceci Irwin netted the hattrick and the Ravens cruised to the pre-district win over OAA-Blue Division champion Ferndale. Anna Waterstredt added two goals while Hannah Spring, Kaitlyn Eberhardt and Zoe Gartner also scored for Royal Oak.

 



MATTAWAN 7, PORTAGE NORTHERN 0: Mattawan cruised to this pre-district win over SMAC foe Portage Northern.

 

KALAMAZOO LOY-NORRIX 3, KALAMAZOO CENTRAL 0: In this all-Kalamazoo district battle, Loy-Norrix posted the shutout.

 

BATTLE CREEK LAKEVIEW 10, BATTLE CREEK CENTRAL 0: Danayah Williams scored twice in the first five minutes and the Sparts (7-8-1) cruised from there in this lopsided Division 1 pre-district contest. Shaelah Clark and Ava Horn added two goals and an assist apiece, while Jaiden Anderson, Lauren Tkac, Eve Clark and Lilamae Frank had single tallies for Lakeview.

 

HOLLAND WEST OTTAWA 8, WYOMING 0: Josie Kuyers recorded the hattrick and the Panthers exploded for five second-half goals in the win. Sydney Wilcox added two goals while Heather Pachulski, Kayden Panse and Jillian Garcia also scored for West Ottawa.

Lainey Pruzinsky scored three goals while Sophia Clark, Maggie Waltenspiel and Marissa Jewell all added two goals apiece for the Yellowjackets. Abby Muma netted the clean sheet in goal for Avondale.

COLDWATER 5, CHARLOTTE 0: Cara Miller notched the hattrick and Coldwater cruised to the district win Wednesday over Charlotte. Etta Machan and Samantha Bernard also scored, Katie O’Dell, Isabella Lozada and Kylee Barnett drew assists, and Isabella Pool picked up the clean sheet between the pipes for the Cardinals (7-9-3).

VICKSBURG 4, PAW PAW 0: Madison Ames scored twice and the Bulldogs advanced in Division 2 with this district win.

Sidney Peters scored two goals and had two assists in the win. Reese Muma, Betsey Skendzel, Mary Kate Carroll and Lilliana David also scored while Riley Collins picked up four assists in the win. Paisleigh Upshaw recorded three saves in goal. Upper Peninsula-based Houghton, making its first appearance in the MHSAA state tournament since 2007, finished 1-7-1. Ella Markham notched 13 saves for the Gremlins.
