WEDNESDAY’S PREP GIRLS SOCCER ROUNDUP: Eisenhower clinches MAC-Red title for second straight season; Stoney Creek edges Midland Dow; Ovid-Elsie trips Fenton

UTICA, Mich. – Last year Utica Eisenhower had to wait until the last game of the league season to claim the Macomb Area Conference-Red Division title.

Not this time.

The Division 1 eighth-ranked Eagles recorded their ninth straight win and fifth shutout in their last six games in a 3-0 victory over visiting Macomb Dakota Wednesday night to clinch the MAC-Red Division championship with two games to spare.

Eisenhower (11-1-1, 8-0-0) had to post a 1-1 draw with Romeo on the last day a year ago to gain the final point to race them into pole position.

This time around, the Eagles are perfect in league play and the only blemishes on the schedule were a 2-1 setback to No. 3-ranked Troy and a 1-1 tie against state-ranked Rochester Adams. Both of those games came in succession on April 11 and April 15, respectively.

Eisenhower has not tasted anything but the sweet juice of victory ever since those two results.

Against Dakota, sophomore Molly Mellott picked up her ninth shutout of the campaign. Sophomore Ellera Jakubowski scored her MAC-Red leading 18th goal of the season and added an assist for good measure. Senior Ava Dukaj and Charlotte Long also scored for the Eagles, who have now outscored the opposition 52-6 overall this season and 16-1 in their last five games.

Inside MAC-Red play, Eisenhower has outscored its opposition 26-2 over eight games. The Eagles have conference games with defending Division 2 state champion Grosse Pointe North and Romeo before opening up Division district play with the pre-districts round next Wednesday. Eisenhower will again play Romeo a third time this season a second time in three days in its pre-district contest.

Last season Eisenhower took eventual Division 1 state champion Rochester Stoney Creek to the brink 3-2 in a game that not only reached a shootout but a contest where the Eagles led 2-1 late in regulation of a D-1 pre-district contest.

ROCHESTER STONEY CREEK 1, MIDLAND DOW 0: In a battle of Division 1 top-15 teams, No. 15 Stoney Creek snuck past injury-riddled Midland Dow in this non-conference matchup. Delaney Batur scored the lone goal for the Cougars (10-4-4). Dow slipped to 9-2-4 overall on the campaign.

OVID-ELSIE 2, FENTON 1: Ovid-Elsie came from behind to defeat Fenton in this non-league matchup. Hailee Campbell set up teammate Evalyn Cole for a 30-yard banger to tie the score and then  the same combination hooked up again for the game-winner as Cole corralled a pass from Cambell and uncorked a 30-year strike that found the webbing for the game-winner. Sarah Newman recorded a career-high 11 saves and Rian Kirby starred defensively to Ovid-Elsie, which improved to 11-2-2 on the season.

ESSEXVILLE GARBER 8, BAY CITY JOHN GLENN 0: Garber moved to 8-0-2 in Tri Valley Conference-Red Division play with this shutout Wednesday. Ciara Kelly scored four goals for the Dukes, while Pam Jacobs, Elle Betzold and Erin Kelly scored for Garber (11-3-5). Natalie Fodrey gained the shutout in goal.
