WICHITA, Kansas – Detroit City FC-Genesee U18 Girls Rouge made the most out of their opportunity this summer.

After earning an at-large berth for the U.S. Youth Soccer (USYS) President’s Cup U18 National Tournament July 12-16 at Stryker Sports Complex in Wichita, Kansas, the side returned home with the experience and memories of reaching the national semifinals of the tournament for the first time.

Detroit City FC-Genesee U18 Girls Rouge finished 2-1-1 overall at the tournament, including 2-0-1 in Group B pool play, to qualify for the Final Four. The road ended with a 2-1 defeat to Sheboygan, Wisconsin-based Lakeshore United FC U18 Girls-Navy in the semis.

Nebraska Select Kearney SC ended up claiming the national championship with a 4-1 victory over Lakeshore United FC U18 Girls-Navy.

Detroit City FC-Genesee U18 Girls Rouge finished with a 9-5 scoring edge and one shutout at the national tournament to cap a successful 2023-24 campaign as one of the top MSPSP Premier 1 club soccer teams in Michigan, the Midwest and in the nation.

“We had an amazing season overall,” noted Detroit City FC-Genesee U18 Girls Rouge coach Rob Nuckolls, who said it was a rarity that a club girls soccer team from that area of Michigan reached the national tournaments at various levels. “We came within a goal or two from playing in the national finals in the (USYS) President’s Cup.

“That was a good team we played,” added Nuckolls of Genesee’s semifinals opponent. “We had some chances in that game but came up short 1-0.”

Over the course of the state cup, regional and national tournaments, Detroit City FC-Genesee U18 Girls Rouge finished 10-2-1 overall (5-0-0 at the state, 3-1-0 at the regional and 2-1-1 at the national tournament) and outscored the opposition 35-12 in those three tournaments. They were state cup champions and both regional and national semifinalists and became one of the more successful clubs at any level under the Detroit City umbrella.

The team, which features several quality players from the graduating class of 2024 and 2025 and mainly from the Flint-Saginaw-Bay City areas, is led by attacking midfielder Iyana Blake (Grand Blanc), center backs Abygail Burnash (Flushing), Maria Thompson (Flint Powers Catholic) and Sydney Hall (Davison), midfielder Nia Smith (Davison), forwards Samantha Beller (Davison), Paige Allis (Davison) and Lillian Kish (Davison), midfielder Sara Snyder (Flint Powers Catholic) and goalkeeper Serenity Wieszciecinski (Bay City Central). Other key members include Liliana Alfaro (Davison Faith Baptist), Payton McKay (Grand Blanc), Shelby Hart (Grand Blanc), Mackenzee Alexander (Davison), Natalie Church (Flint Powers Catholic), Emree Rose (Davison), Cally Dorman (Davison) and Jenna Woolman (Davison) also gained minutes on the team. The aforementioned Beller did not play in the state cup portion of the run.
