USL-W LEAGUE WOMEN’S SOCCER: First-half goals lift AFC Ann Arbor past Flint City AFC

FLINT, Mich. – AFC Ann Arbor put its foot to the pedal Friday night and did not let up.

The pace resulted in an impressive 3-0 shutout of host Flint City AFC in a USL-W League-Great Lakes Division triumph at Kettering University’s Atwood Stadium near downtown Flint.

AFC Ann Arbor scored all three goals in the first half an dominated play from start to finish in moving to 5-5-1 overall on the season and in the Great Lakes Division. Flint City finished its 2024 campaign 4-8-0 record after winning the Great Lakes Division last year.

AFC Ann Arbor scored on its first shot on frame to set the tone and the eventual game-winner came in the ninth minute for the Might Oaks.

Claire Cahalan’s set piece from just outside the right corner of the box sailed into the six and Vivian Cahalan was there to head home the close-range shot past Flint City goalkeeper Kate Helfen.

Cate Brown netted an insurance tally in the 33rd minute scoring from the right side of the box before being knocked down. Alexandra Hooks set up the goal.

AFC Ann Arbor added onto its lead in the 45th minute after finishing off a touch from Purmonen.

Ann Arbor did not score again in the second half but still controlled play for long stretches of the contest.

The Mighty Oaks outshot Flint City by a 16-6 advantage, including 11-3 with shots on frame, and even held a 5-3 edge on cornerkicks during the match.

Ann Arbor will conclude its season with a home game Sunday against Great Lakes Division champion Detroit City FC.

Detroit City will be the Great Lakes Division’s only representative in the USL-W League postseason this year.
