FLINT, Mich. – Madison Cotta was definitely made a run to the right place at the right time.
The talented forward made a run on the right side and was in open space to net the game’s only goal, as Midwest United downed Flint City AFC 1-0 Sunday night in a USL-W League match at Kettering University’s Atwood Stadium in Flint.
On the game-winner in the 16th minute, Abby Werthman beat a pair of marks along the left side before slotting a low pass through the box. Cotta was left open on the right side and she buried her attempt from 10 yards out into the back of the net past Flint City goalkeeper Kate Helfen.
Both Cotta and Werthman play collegiately for Western Michigan University.
Midwest United’s defense made it stand and goalkeeper Brylee Borgman recorded the clean sheet with four saves on the night. While three of the stops were routine, Borgman made a highlight-reel save midway through the first half to protect the lead, making a diving full-lateral save to her right off a shot by Maya Carter where she got enough hand on the ball to push it just wide of the goal.
Midwest United (7-3-0) remained in third place in the division with the victory. Midwest outshot Flint City 13-9 overall, including 5-4 with shots on frame and with all five of those shots on Helfen coming in the first half.
Flint City AFC (4-7-0) only had 13 players dressed for the contest which was just two days after the team had to forfeit a game on Friday due to not having enough available players. Flint City did generate nine cornerkicks on the night, including seven in the first half, but could not net an equalizer despite controlling long stretches of the second half.
