WARREN, Mich. – The Flint City Bucks have fallen from the ranks of the unbeatens.
First-year franchise Union FC Macomb scored a pair of early goals off free kicks, added a late breakaway goal and held on for a 3-1 triumph over the visiting Bucks in USL League Two Great Lakes Division play Wednesday at Warren DeLaSalle High School.
Jeremy Sharp (Michigan State) curled in a pair free kicks – both from 19 yards out but in different places near the top of the box.
The first one was bent around the wall and inside the right post in the 17th minute. Sharp scored again in a similar position about 10 yards to the left and this time bent it above the wall and into the back of the net on the left side in the 29th minute.
Union FC Macomb scored on its first and only shot on frame of the second half in the 88th minute. Zach Townsend (Oakland University) sent a long clear out past midfield and Joshua Copeland (University of Detroit-Mercy) went off to the races in wide open space and cashed in his breakaway opportunity for the 3-0 advantage.
Flint City was able to spoil the shutout when Kai Philip scored during a goal mouth scramble nearly two minutes into stoppage time. But the Bucks, who controlled play for the final 65 minutes of the contest, ran out of time.
The Bucks held a 19-10 shots advantage in the contest, and both teams also traded off six shots on frame. Flint City also held a 8-5 edge on cornerkicks.
Flint City (9-1-3) has already clinched a postseason berth and can still win the Great Lakes Division title for the second straight year with a home win Saturday night against last-place Michiana Lions. The Bucks have 30 points and trail Midwest United FC (31 points) by just point entering its season finale. Midwest’s league schedule is complete.
Union FC Macomb now has 12 points and sits in seventh place at 4-9-0 overall. Macomb will host Oakland County FC on Friday at Utica Swinehart Stadium to wrap up its inaugural season but can still pass Lancing City in the standings with a win and a Lansing loss this weekend.
