ROYAL OAK, Mich. – Kalamazoo FC ended the USL League Two season Sunday the way it began the campaign – with a victory.
Following its 4-1 triumph over home-standing Oakland County Football Club at Royal Oak High School, the visitors from western Michigan leap-frogged AFC Ann Arbor into third place in the final eight-team Great Lakes Division standings. Kalamazoo FC finishes with 27 points, one point ahead of AFC Ann Arbor (26 points).
The Flint City Bucks (33 points) and Midwest United FC (31 points) finished ahead of Kalamazoo FC and grabbed the division’s two USL-League Two postseason berths.
Kalamazoo FC (8-3-3, 8-3-3 GLD) never trailed, scoring the game’s first three goals and cruising to the Great Lakes Division victory. Kalamazoo scored in the fifth, 23rd, 55th and 81st minutes to prevail.
Owen Smith (Oakland University) scored in the fifth minute to give visiting Kalamazoo the 1-0 advantage, while Donavan Phillip (Oakland University) scored what proved to be the game-winner in the 23rd minute.
Smith made it 3-0 with his second tally of the game in the 55th minute, while Asher Barns (Niagara University) scored the fourth goal in the 81st minute to move the score to 4-1 and cap the scoring for the match. Kalamazoo FC outscored its opposition 37-15 this season.
Jahzinho O’Garro (Bethany College) scored in the 70th minute for Oakland County (4-8-2, 4-8-2), which was outscored 26-16 this season.
