TUESDAY’S PREP GIRLS SOCCER ROUNDUP: Rockford advances in OKC-Red on late goal; Pioneer hands Skyline first loss


ROCKFORD, Mich. – What do you get when you have two very defensive-minded soccer teams meet up on the pitch in a tournament setting? A total of 79 minutes of scoreless soccer.

Scoreless soccer until the 80th minute.

Division 1 state-ranked Rockford picked up a goal with 37 seconds remaining Tuesday, as the Rams edged Caledonia 1-0 in an Ottawa Kent Conference-Red Division Tournament semifinals clash.

Sophomore Sawyer Lenon scored on a goal-mouth scramble in the final minute, putting a shot by future Grand Valley State goalkeeper Davanee Balczak. Rockford freshman Paige Shepherd recorded her team’s 11tth shutout of the campaign, as the Rams have outscored the opposition 38-5 this season.

With the win, second-seeded Rockford (10-0-5), the No. 2 seed in the tournament, will host fourth-seeded Grand Haven Thursday at 6:45 p.m. with the OKC-Red conference tournament title on the line. The overall eight-school final standings will be determined where each team placed in the regular season and tournament with the inverse-style point system added together to determine the overall winner in the final standings.

Top-ranked and top-seeded Hudsonville was upset Monday 1-0 in a shootout to No. 4-seeded Grand Haven. Hudsonville will face Caledonia in the third-place game Thursday.

ANN ARBOR PIONEER 1, ANN ARBOR SKYLINE 0: Pioneer handed Skyline its first loss of the season in this 1-0 Southeastern Conference game against the No. 2-ranked Eagles. Quincy Behm scored and Molly Burke registered the shutout for the Pioneers (11-3-1, 6-2-1).

SALINE 8, DEXTER 0: Saline remained in second place in the Southeastern Conference-Red Division with this lopsided victory Tuesday over Dexter. Sienna Snyder scored two goals with an assist to pace the Hornets. Bettina Soares, Sadie Walsh, Cora Conley, Anika Sadek, Nora Walsh and Laynie Tousa also scored for Saline (13-1-2, 7-1-1).

MUSKEGON MONA SHORES 2, ZEELAND EAST 0: Top-seeded Mona Shores advanced to the Ottawa Kent Conference-Green Division conference tournament finals with this win Tuesday. Lilly Houle had a goal and an assists and Ella Kinney also scored for the Sailors (14-2-2). Shay Norden also had an assist for Mona Shores, which had a 17-1 shots advantage in the game. Jersey VanderWall made one save for the team’s ninth shutout of the season. Mona Shores advanced to the conference tournament finals Zeeland West on Thursday at home. The Sailors can clinch the overall title outright with a win.

AUBURN HILLS OAKLAND CHRISTIAN 10, PLYMOUTH CHRISTIAN 0: Leah Zarrilli had four goals and an assist as Oakland Christian kept pace with Plymouth Christian in the Michigan Independent Athletic Conference race. Jessica Reyes added two goals and three assists, Rowan Klein had two goals and one assist, Val Santurtun had one goal and one assist and Carolina Echeverri also scored for Oakland Christian. The Lancers play host to Plymouth Christian at 4:30 p.m. Thursday with the conference title on the line.

CLARKSTON 3, ROYAL OAK 1: Emma Bradley netted the hattrick and Clarkston clinched the OAA White Division league title with this victory Tuesday. McKinlee Brumm and Emi Catinella drew assists for the Wolves (11-4-2, 5-0-0), who play Davison Wednesday and still have a make-up game with Birmingham Seaholm.
