THURSDAY’S PREP GIRLS SOCCER ROUNDUP: Mercy edges Regina, advances to CHSL finals; St. Mary’s, Cranbrook win CHSL tourney games; Stevenson’s Jones sets school record


FARMINGTON HILLS, Mich. – After finishing second on points to Birmingham Marian in the regular season of the Catholic High School League-Central Division, Farmington Hills Marcy still has a chance to be the last team standing in the league.

The unranked second-seeded Marlins advanced to Saturday’s CHSL-Bishop Tournament finals with a 1-0 victory over third-seeded Warren Regina Thursday in Farmington Hills.

The Marlins (7-4-5) will face fourth-seeded Bloomfield Hills Cranbrook-Kingswood at 10 a.m. Saturday at Royal Oak Shrine Catholic High School to win the rare Bishop Tournament crown.

Arielle Etue scored the game’s lone goal off an passes from senior Luwam Abraha and Bree Mikha to send the Marlins into the finals. Senior Elle Borys notched the shutout for Mercy while Audrey Guyot anchored the Marlins’ stout back line effort.

Mercy, which finished 3-0-2 in Central Division play to earn the No. 2 seed behind Central Division champion and top-seeded Birmingham Marian (4-0-1 in the Central Division), has outscored the opposition 24-11 this season with eight clean sheets.

Senior Morgan West, sophomore Isabelle Van Hoof, juniors Lauren Gawne and Maddie Linton and freshmen Shannah Schall and Katie Hastings have also been key cogs in that backline effort this season for a team that has a posted a 0.74 team goals-against-average and the eight shutouts. No team has been able to score more than two goals upon this season and only three teams have scored twice in one game against the unranked Marlins.



ORCHARD LAKE ST. MARY’S 2, GROSSE POINTE WOODS UNIVERSITY-LIGGETT 1: Carline Kopmeyer scored her 10th goal of the season and Cameron Cole added her 32nd tally of the campaign Thursday as third-year program Orchard Lake St. Mary’s advanced to the CHSL-Cardinal Tournament finals for the first time. Freshman Presley Rodriguez had an assists to the Division 2 13th-ranked Eaglets (13-2-1), who claimed its first CHSL-AA Division title last week with an 8-0-0 league record.


BLOOMFIELD HILLS CRANBROOK 4, BIRMINGHAM MARIAN 3: Cranbrook bounced back after a early-season loss to Marian to take this CHSL Bishop Tournament semifinals win Thursday over top-seeded Marian. Nia Bordogna had a goal and an assists while Giu Agrusso and Abbu Walton also scored in a losing effort for Marian.


STERLING HEIGHTS STEVENSON 4, WEST BLOOMFIELD 1: Presley Jones scored four goals and Stevenson cruised to the non-conference win Thursday. Jones has a career- and team-high 22 goals on the campaign, setting a single-season school record for the Titans. Ava McGowan and Lexie Curyzdlo drew assists for Stevenson (8-9-0).


SOUTHFIELD CHRISTIAN-NOVI CHRISTIAN UNIFIED 1, ROCHESTER HILLS LUTHERAN NORTHWEST 1: Anika Bella scored the lone goal for Southfield Christian off a pass from Grace Bell. Kaitlyn Groh had 10 saves on the night for the Eagles.
