HAMTRAMCK, Mich. – The Tampa Bay Rowdies are moving on in upset style.
The No. 6 seed in the Eastern Conference, Tampa Bay fought tooth-and-nail with host Detroit City FC to tie 1-1 after regulation and after 30 minutes of overtime period entered a shootout with the hosts.
The Rowdies used a 3-1 edge on penalties to squeak by third-seeded Detroit City FC 2-1 in a USL Eastern Conference quarterfinals matchup Saturday at Keyworth Stadium.
The Tampa Bay rowdies will advance to the Eastern Conference semifinals where they will visit the Charleston Battery on Nov. 10.
Cal Jennings scored in the 19th minute for Tampa Bay to stake the Rowdies with a 1-0 halftime advantage.
Nick Moon countered in the 49th minute for Detroit City FC to level the game at 1-1.
Neither side would convert again in the second half or during the two 15-minute overtime periods.
Eddie Munjoma, Jordan Doherty and Lewis Holton made their penalties for the Rowdies.
Ben Morris converted his penalty shot for Detroit City FC.
Tampa Bay outscored Detroit City FC 16-11 overall, although Detroit held a narrow 5-4 edge with shots on goal and a 58-percent to 42-percent advantage off possession. Tampa Bay held an 8-4 edge off cornerkicks in the match.
Jordan Farr recorded three saves in regulation and overtime for the sixth-seeded Rowdies (14-8-12). He also stopped a pair of shots during the shootout to put the finishing touches on the upset over the No. 3-seeded Le Rouge.
Detroit City FC falls to 15-8-11 overall after earning the No. 3 seed in the USL Championship-Eastern Conference tournament. Nate Steinwascher finished with seven saves leading up to the shootout for DCFC.
