SATURDAY’S PREP GIRLS SOCCER ROUNDUP: Mona Shores blanks Traverse City Central; Saline edges Holt; Oakland Christian down Foley
TRAVERSE CITY, Mich. – In a battle of league champions from last year, Muskegon Mona Shores’ trip to beautiful Traverse City Saturday proved to be fruitful as the Sailors recorded a 1-0 non-conference victory over Traverse City Central.
Shay Norden scored the goal and Jersey VanderWall notched her sixth shutout of the season recording one save for Mona Shores (7-1-1).
The Sailors are the defending Ottawa Kent Conference Green Division champions, while Traverse City Central is the defending Big North Conference champs.
Mona Shores has now outscored its opposition 37-6 with four straight shutouts and six overall in nine games.
Traverse City Central (2-3-2) was shut out for the second straight game and third time in four games. The Trojans hold a 12-9 scoring edge overall on the campaign.
SALINE 4, HOLT 2: Sadie Walsh scored two goals with an assist to lead the Hornets to the non-conference Saturday. Caitlyn Sturms and Sienna Snyder also scored for Saline (5-1-1).
AUBURN HILLS OAKLAND CHRISTIAN 3, MADISON HEIGHTS BISHOP FOLEY 1: Leah Zarelli scored twice and Oakland Christian recorded the non-conference win featuring two Division 4 top-15 schools. Rowan Klein also scored and Veronia Austin recorded the win in net for the Lancers (4-0-0).
HOLLY 4, FLINT KEARSLEY 2: Grace Kubiak starred in goal for the Bronchos in this Flint Metro League game. She recorded eight saves including a penalty kick stop during the contest.
FLINT POWERS CATHOLIC 0, MILAN 0: The Chargers picked up this tie in the first round of the Jim Floore Shootout Saturday hosted by Williamston High SChool.
FLINT POWERS CATHOLIC 2, GRAND RAPIDS WEST CATHOLIC 0: These two Division 3 state-ranked squad battled in the second round of the Jim Floore Shootout Saturday with the Chargers taking home the clean sheet victor.
FLINT POWERS CATHOLIC 4, BIG RAPIDS 0: Powers finished 2-0-1 on the day at the Jim Floore Shootout at Miland High School. The Chargers are now 5-0-2 on the season with six shutouts and a 13-2 scoring edge overall. Powers did not allow a goal in the three-game performance Saturday, posting a 6-0 advantage on the day.
GRAND RAPIDS WEST CATHOLIC 2, MILAN 1: Fourth-ranked West Catholic gained the edge over 12th-ranked Milan in the second round of the Jim Floore Shootout.
MILAN 2, BIG RAPIDS 1: Milan moved to 6-3-1 on the year following this win at the Jim Floore Shootout, where the big Reds finished 1-1-1 against teams ranked or listed as honorable mention in the rankings. Milan, ranked 12th coming in, edged big Rapids, honorable mention in the polls.
