PORTAGE, Mich. – Caledonia did something on Saturday that only three other schools have been able to do so far this season. That’s score a goal on Portage Central.
In the end, that didn’t matter.
The Mustangs, ranked in the top five in Division 1 all season, made Caledonia its 10th victim in all starts with a 3-1 non-conference victory.
Only Rockford, East Kentwood, Stevensville-Lakeshore and now Caledonia have scored goals on the Mustangs, who have a paltry 0.37 team goals-against-average on the books nearly halfway through the regular season.
Offensively, Portage Central is taking names as it has chalked up 51 goals over 11 contests – that’s 4.64 goals a game for the 10-0-1 Mustangs.
Against Caledonia, Gavan Sherman tallied two goals while senior midfielder Jack Hinze had the other, as Portage Central continues to defeat quality opponents on the west side of Michigan and our a part of just a handful of programs state-wide in all divisions and conferences yet to suffer a loss.
Senior William Tarpley is a returning starter and one of the leaders of a stout defensive unit in front of 6-foot-6, 200-pound junior goalkeeper Gunnar Thorhallsso, who is a first-year starter.
KINGSFORD 8, SEYMOUR (WISC.) 0: The Division 3 unbeaten Flivvers dipped into northern Wisconsin and returned home with another shutout victory. Kingsford improved to 9-0-0 on the year and now have outscored the opposition 48-2. Senior Jaxon Buckley notched three more goals with an assist, as the forward/midfielder continues to run this engine and has 24 goals on the year and 111 career. Gavyn Landon added two goals and an assist, Ben Fornetti and sophomore Jett Buckley chipped in with a goal and an helper, and Gavin Kinsella scored the other goal for Kingsford. Junior Landon Adam recorded his team’s seventh shutout in nine games.
ROCHESTER ADAMS 1, OXFORD 1: In a battle of Division 1 state-ranked teams, these two squads decided very little in this OAA-Red Division matchup that was a make-up contest from an earlier rainout.
TROY ATHENS 0, ANN ARBOR HURON 0: In another match featuring two top-15 teams in Division 1, defending Southeastern Conference-Red Division winner.
WALLED LAKE CENTRAL 7, ADRIAN 1: The Vikings scored early in often in putting up a seven-spot on the Maples in this non-conference matchup Saturday.
TROY 3, ROCHESTER 1: The Colts moved to 6-0-0 on the season and remained in first place in the rugged OAA Red Division with this narrow make-up win over the Falcons. Troy (6-0-0, 3-0-0) has now outscored the opposition 13-3 on the year.
CEDAR SPRINGS 2, ZEELAND WEST 0: Brody Klenk notched the shutout between the pipes for Cedar Springs. Ian Stearns and Austin Grice scored the goals for the Red Hawks.
BERKLEY 2, CLARKSTON 0: Brody Cain scored twice and Berkley posted an OAA-Red Division make-up win Saturday. The Bears improved to 10-1-1 on the season and 2-1-0 in league play.
FRUITPORT 2, MUSKEGON REETHS-PUFFER 0: Division 2 state-ranked Fruitport recorded the non-league win Saturday.
GRANDVILLE CALVIN CHRISTIAN 0, NORTH MUSKEGON 0: These two Division 4 state-ranked teams settled little in this non-conference scoreless draw.
LELAND 4, MUSKEGON WESTERN MICHIGAN CHRISTIAN 2: Leland gained some measure of revenge Saturday of last year’s Division 4 state semifinals match, as the Comets doubled up the Warriors in a contest that featured two of the top Division 4 teams.
MARQUETTE 6, GAYLORD 0: Marquette dipped across the big bridge for a non-conference game and came away with the clean sheet. Edan Hautamaki earned the shutout for the Sentinels.
NOVI 2, SOUTH LYON EAST 0: Novi stepped out of the rugged KLAA-West Division to blank one of the top LVC schools in a non-conference game Saturday. Jackson Shaw and Noah Kakish scored for Novie, while Christopher Miller and Kevin Percy shared the shutout for the Wildcats.
UTICA EISENHOWER 2, UTICA FORD 0: Eisenhower ventured to the southern end of the Utica school district to upend district rival Utica Ford in this Macomb Area Conference crossover contest.
WALLED LAKE WESTERN 5, WALLED LAKE NORTHERN 1: Western earned the victory in the Walled Lake Cup tournament.

The Michigan-based PMG, founded in 2022, its flagship production the Michigan Soccer Network and all other affiliates, is actively scheduling games in a wide variety of high school leagues and conferences, small colleges, amateur, pre-professional, youth club, and other avenues of the beautiful game in Michigan.

PMG will also be holding various “Win A Free Broadcast” contest at various parts of the fall, winter (indoor) and spring seasons.
"(Michigan Soccer Network) has does a great job making these kids feel special,” offered Michal Hatfield, girls soccer coach at Trenton High School who also coaches in the Detroit City FC youth club system. “The broadcasts were professionally done and we were very pleased when they did our games. They did a great job with (play-by-play), graphics and postgame interviews with the kids. And a lot of people saw it. We had uncles and aunts that have never seen their nieces play get a chance to watch them on YouTube). And all of the kids were able to jump on there (the YouTube channel) afterwards and watch the game.”
The MSN staff had the pleasure of broadcasting multiple games the last two school years for schools in the Oakland Activities Association and have received its fair share of feedback. The goal is to conduct broadcasts of games throughout the state of Michigan, especially in the larger populated regions.
“MSN has done a great job with broadcasts in our league (Macomb Area Conference),” said Trevor Foster, current head coach of the Romeo girls soccer program, goalkeepers coach for Oakland University’s soccer programs, and director at the Michigan Goalkeepers Academy. “I know the girls love it. And I know some of the parents were putting their earphones on and listening to the game when they were (in the stands) and it gives relatives a chance to watch games that they normally wouldn’t be able to.
“It’s as close to professional (broadcast) as any broadcast of high school soccer that you will see out there,” added Foster. “Plus, they do all types of (amateur and pre-professional) leagues out there (in Michigan).”
“We were very pleased, especially with the knowledge of high school soccer in the state of Michigan from the play-by-play announcers and color commentators,” said Todd Heugh, the current director of athletics at Troy Athens High School and a former coach at the school. “They put together a valuable (product) and the games are live on YouTube for everyone to watch, even if you are (a relative or an alumni) not in the area. I know coaches go on there (YouTube), too, to watch games of an upcoming opponent.”
The PMG staff has a goal of 100-plus games this fall from mid-August through November. The Michigan Soccer Network conducted a record 50 remote or in-person broadcasts during the month of June.
PMG also has contacts within Michigan, the Midwest and even in different parts of the U.S. and have become broadcast partners for more than 15 different leagues or franchises within those leagues over the past three years. PMG has multiple broadcasting rights for within the USL-League Two, USL-W League, UPSL, MWPL, NISA, WSPL and more and constantly expanding its web of coverage both on various YouTube channels and on our website at www.michigansoccernetwork.com. It has broadcasted more high school boys soccer and high school girls soccer at more than 75 high schools in Michigan.
