PREP GIRLS SOCCER ROUNDUP Manchester claims Cascades Conference title; Clinton wins LCAA behind Lauer’s record-setting night; Northern Michigan Christian tops in NMSL; Zion, SJOLLC win titles

FRIDAY’S PREP GIRLS SOCCER ROUNDUP: League champion North Muskegon ties Ludington, still undefeated in West Michigan League over four years

MANCHESTER, Mich. – Manchester put the finishing touches on a perfect Cascades Conference championship Monday with a resounding 8-0 victory over visiting Napoleon.

The Flying Dutchmen, ranked fifth in Division 4 after not being ranked the first couple weeks of the season, won the inaugural Cascades Conference trophy, as in the past current members competed in the Independent Soccer League or as an Independent. Last year Manchester was 10-0 against teams in the Independent Soccer League. Two years ago, the Flying Dutchmen were ISL runners-up to Adrian Lenawee Christian.

This season, Manchester is 15-2-0 overall and riding a 15-game unbeaten streak. The Flying Dutchmen opened the season with losses to Jackson Lumen Christi (3-1) and Milan (2-1) on April 5 and April 8, respectively, but have not lost since. Manchester finished a perfect 14-0-0 in the league which has an all-time high eight of the 12 schools now sponsoring girls soccer.

Manchester has outscored the opposition 76-7 this season with 13 shutouts – a school record the squad keeps extending. Inside Cascades Conference play, the Flying Dutchmen have outscored its 14 opponents 72-1 with 13 clean sheets. The only school to score on Manchester in league play was Hanover-Horton on May 17, a 10-1 victory for the Flying Dutchmen.

A large senior class of nine including three exchange students, plus some talented underclassmen have aided this year’s incredible run, which at one time included a 10-game streak where Manchester did not concede a goal.

Abbi Austin led the way with a pair of goals, with Megan Edwards notching the shutout in goal. Gianna Turek, Fiona Howard, Savannah Roe and Lila Harvey starred defensively as the back four has all season for the Flying Dutchmen.

Manchester will be idle until May 28, when it hosts an opponent to be determined at 4 p.m. in a Division 4 district semifinals match.

Last year, Manchester captured its district championship with wins over Clinton (4-2) and Adrian Lenawee Christian (2-1) before falling to nemesis Jackson Lumen Christi in the regional semifinals in overtime, 2-1.

CLINTON 12, DUNDEE 0: Clinton cruised to the Lenawee County Activities Association victory, finishing the season perfect at 10-0-0 overall in the conference where six schools sponsor teams.

It marks the fourth straight season that Clinton captured the LCAA crown, last year going 11-0-1.

Junior Aubrey Lauer, who rotates between forward and attacking midfielder, scored a single-game school record 10 goals on the night, one of the highest single-game performances in state history. She now has 70 goals this season and 153 for her three-year career, as she will chase 200 goals sometimes next year.

Sophomore Mia Calucci and freshman Veronica Bartlett also scored for Clinton. Senior Anna Schaffner added five assists, sophomore Lillian Trubiano had two assists, and sophomore Cylee Elkins picked up one assist for the Redwolves.

Sophomore Jacklyn Whiting registered the team’s ninth shutout of the season.

This season Clinton moved to 12-3-0 overall with its three losses coming against Division 2 Parma Western and Division 4 powerhouse programs Plymouth Christian and Jackson Lumen Christi.

Clinton has outscored the opposition 94-21 this season with nine shutouts. In league play, the Redwolves have eight clean sheets and outscored its 10 opponents 82-2. The only LCAA opponents to score on Clinton was Blissfield (8-1 victory) and Onsted (9-1 victory).

MCBAIN NORTHERN MICHIGAN CHRISTIAN 4, SHEPHERD 0: The Comets picked up this shutout which put the finishing touches on the Northern Michigan Soccer League-Southern Division championship.

It was the final league game for the MNMC seniors Kylee Winkle and Jada VanNoord, the school’s all-time leading goal scorer. VanNoord added three more goals to her total with the hattrick, with Emerson Bosscher also scoring for the Comets.

Winkle, Gracyn Swiler and Leighton Tossey picked up assists and Harper Tossey recorded three saves in goal for the shutout, her team’s seventh.

The Comets have outscored the opposition 70-12 on the season heading into the regular season finale with Oscoda

ST. JOSEPH OUR LADY OF THE LAKE CATHOLIC 4, ST. JOSEPH MICHIGAN LUTHERAN 0: The Lakers put the finishing touches on another BCS League title with this shutout of arch-rival Michigan Lutheran.

St. Joseph Our Lady of the Lake Catholic now owns a 56-13 scoring edge this season with 11 shutouts. Inside the four-team league, the Lakers own a 34-1 edge on the scoreboard with five clean sheets.

Our Lady of the Lake improves to 13-3-1 with the win and finishes a perfect 6-0-0 in conference play, where only four schools fielded teams this year.

Amelia Lewis scored twice for the Lakers and Nora Proos had a goal and an assist.

BYRON CENTER ZION CHRISTIAN 6, GRAND RAPIDS WELLSPRING PREP 0: Zion Christian put the finishing touches on the Alliance League championship with this lopsided victory over Wellspring Prep.

So far this season, Zion Christian is 12-3-1 overall and finished 6-0-0 in conference play, as a couple of league members dropped soccer this year.

The Mountaineers have outscored the opposition 70-22 with six shutouts and 31-3 in league play.

The program was 4-1-2 in league play last year and finished second to Grand Rapids West Michigan Aviation Academy.

SAUGATUCK 7, SCHOOLCRAFT 2: The Trailblazers wrapped up the regular season with this SAC crossover win. Cecelia Atkins scored five goals with one assists to lead the way. Neave Rewa added two goals and three assists and Kennedy Gusafson recorded 10 saves on 12 shots for Saugatuck.

STERLING HEIGHTS STEVENSON 2, FRASER 1: This Macomb Area Conference-White Division clash was shortened in the second half due to severe weather, but not before junior Presley Jones scored twice to add to her single-season school record 24 goals on the campaign. Chloe Nissan and Maria Micakaj turned in fine defensive work for the Titans (9-9-0). Sevenson will face crosstown rival Sterling Heights in a Division 1 pre-district May 23.
