WASHINGTON TOWNSHIP, Mich. – It was definitely Leon Maric day on Saturday.

Maric scored two first-half goals and the Michigan Stars remained unbeaten in National Independent Soccer Association-East Conference play Saturday night with a 2-0 shutout over the visiting Maryland Bobcats FC at Romeo High School some 30 miles northeast of Detroit.

Maric scored the eventual game-winner in the 21st minute, then struck again five minutes later with a 26th-minute goal to pace the Stars (7-1-0, 4-0-0 NISA) in a game played at Barnabo Stadium at Romeo High School. Both goals were unassisted.

Tatenda Mkuruva notched his team’s fourth shutout of the season and third in NISA play.

With the win, the Michigan Stars remained alone in first place with 12 points. The Stars have outscored their league opposition 10-4 and 13-5 overall and have four clean sheets on the season. Three of those shutouts have come in league play.

Michigan’s only loss came in the second round of the 108th annual Lamar Hunt U. S Open Cup back on April 17.

The Michigan Stars will travel to Dalton, Georgia, and Dalton Stadium May 11 to face Georgia FC for another East Conference matchup at 2 p.m.s.
