TUCKAHOE, N.J. – The Michigan Wolves 2008’s run has ended in the Final Four.
The Wolves 2008 side reached the semifinals of the National Academy League U16 Nationals Tournament before falling to New York-based Downtown United Soccer Club 2-1 in a game that reached a shootout (4-3 on penalties).
The tournament was held July 14-18 at Tuckahoe Turf Farms complex near Hammonton, New Jersey, about 30 miles southeast of the Philadelphia area.
“We had a great run in the first year of the league,” said Wolves 08 coach Ken Shingledecker, who has coach youth club and high school soccer in the Detroit area for close to 20 years. “We came within a goal of making it to the finals. There are a bunch of really talented young players on this team.
“The (NAL) is kind of feeds into MLS Next where some of these guys might go on to play in the MLS Next over the next couple of years,” said Shingledecker, whose team in mainly players who will be entering their sophomore seasons of high school or a couple will be entering their juniors years.
Over the course of the 2023-24 season, the Michigan Wolves 08 NAL side posted a respectable 22-5-4 record and was consistently one of the top teams in the National Academy League, which is a feeder league into the MLS Next Academy system.
