PONTIAC, Mich. – Cabato started fast and hung on for dear life Sunday afternoon.
The end result for the talented Windsor, Ontario, women’s soccer club was a 3-1 victory over Strike Club in the Michigan Soccer Association Gerhard Mengel Women’s Open State Cup Tournament Finals at the United Wholesale Mortgage Sports Complex in Pontiac.
Cabato scored in the first minute and dominated play for 85 minutes before Strike Club made a late push to get back into the game. In the end it was not enough for Orchard Lake, Michigan-based Strike Club to come back.
It took Cabato just 34 seconds to strike first, as Meghan Carvalho converted a breakaway feed from Andrea Parr in just the first minute and on the game’s first shot.
Carvalho netted the brace when she scored on her second breakaway attempt – again off a pass from Parr – in the 11th minute to gain control and keep Strike Club on its heels.
Michelle Hunter punched in the third goal for Cabato in the 26th minute and the Windsor side was in complete control at that point.
Cabato controlled possession through the entire first half and most of the second half until Strike Club found new life and made a late-game comeback effort. Strike Club picked up the pace down the stretch, with Nikki Fellhauer curling in a cornerkick above traffic and inside the far post in the 89th minute, which trimmed the deficit down to 3-1.
Strike Club recorded five of its six second-half shots after the 84th minute and even had three late cornerkicks down the stretch but could not net a second and third goal to force overtime. Strike Club had a shot cleared off the goal line in the 90th minute, while Fellhauer had another bending corner into a goal-mouth scrum cleared away during stoppage time in the contest.
Cabato outshot Strike Club 17-9 overall, including 10-5 with shots on frame, while Cabato also held a 5-3 edge on cornerkicks in the contest.
Samira Somer made four saves, three late in the second half, to gain the win between the pipes for Cabato. Counterpart Heather Petroulias collected seven saves for Strike Club to keep her team within striking range but her side could not complete the comeback bid.
