GIRLS SOCCER: Spring Lake lands permanently on state map with first state title over Marian

EAST LANSING, Mich. – The first time Becky May was introduced on the soccer field at Michigan State University, the announcer mentioned that May was from Spring Lake, Michigan.

One of her teammates looked at May and needed a geographical question answered.

“I played here in college, so this was kind of like a homecoming for me. But here’s why that is so important. When I got announced the first time I started (a game) at Michigan State and he announced that I am from Spring Lake, Michigan, the girl next to me said, ‘where in the world is Spring Lake?’ Because no one here heard of any (town) outside of the suburbs of Detroit,” explained May. “Well, they have heard of us now.”

May is now the head coach at Spring Lake High School just 15 miles southeast of Muskegon on Michigan’s west side. If those around the Michigan soccer community don’t know of Spring Lake, they clearly do now.

Top-ranked Spring Lake completed its dream season on the pitch Saturday afternoon – ironically on Michigan State’s campus – and the Lakers walked off the pitch with a 1-0 victory over eighth-ranked Birmingham Marian in the Division 2 state finals at DeMartin Stadium.

The victory not only gave the Lakers their first state title in girls soccer, but it became the schools first team state championship overall after the school had only earned individual state championships in various sports. Even Spring Lake’s baseball team lost in the Division 2 state title game on the same day only ¼-mile to the east in a game that ended around the same time.

“This is so unbelievable,” smiled May. “This is truly our first state championship in school history – literally.”

Spring Lake and Marian were the only two schools to land in the top spot in the MIHSSCA Division 2 state rankings this season and the Lakers ended up on top when it mattered most. The win was a rematch of the 2021 state finals where Marian prevailed, 3-0, in the Lakers’ first-ever appearance in the state finals. The Mustangs were ranked No. 1 during that 2021 season.

“We came up short (three years) ago and my (seniors) were freshmen. It wasn’t just a matter of getting back here and winning a state championship – obviously that is amazing – but for them it was personal,” offered May. “So, we sat and waited after our state semis (win over Holland Christian) and to see who would win that game. We wanted it to be Marian (and Marian defeated DeWitt). We wanted to get back and prove ourselves and compete with them. Show that we can compete with the east side (schools) and stand up. They did the job today.”

The Mustangs competed in their 14th state finals match and slipped to 9-5 overall in those games dating back to 2002.

“They were just resolute in defending (us). They didn’t physically play the brand of soccer that we anticipated to be honest,” said first-year Marian coach. “I didn’t think (Ella Andree and Avey Patino) were as threatening as we thought they were. (We just) made a silly mistake defensively in that first half. You put the ball in the box and that Patino is going to put it away. We gave her too much time and space. Outside of that, it was a lot of balls over the top that we delt with well and (goalkeeper) Dani (Mertz) cleaned up. We just couldn’t get anything going on the attacking end. Their keeper pulled off a great save in the first half from distance and I felt was going in and a couple of chances in the second half. You know, it just wasn’t our day.”

This time around, Spring Lake scored a goal in the 27th minute and the Lakers’ stingy defense hung on for the victory which not only gave the school its first soccer state championship but the school’s first team state title overall.

Senior Ella Andree broke free on the right side and used her speed to find space. She slotted the ball over to freshman Aveya Patino to notch her 29th goal of the season with a low shot into the left side of the net from six yards out with13:13 to play in the first half.

The Lakers defense stood tall, thwarting anything the Mustangs threw at them to record their fourth postseason shutout and 13th of the season overall. Spring Lake finished with a 17-3 scoring edge in the tournament run and 72-17 for the entire campaign.

Spring Lake’s speed wreaked havoc and pout pressure on Marian’s back line and midfield the whole game.

“It’s easily our team speed. You can’t coach speed – they’re just born with those wheels,” offered May. “All you have to do as a coach is put them in the right spot and get them to work together. Then you are just going to be disruptive from getting in (with the ball). So, when they don’t find the back of the net they’re putting defenses on their heels and forcing defenses to respond to them. As a result to that, that give us more opportunities to posses the middle of the field. Put (the fast players) up top and let them run havoc and enjoy the benefits of that.”

It was the first goal that Marian conceded in the postseason this year, and just the 11th all season. It proved to be the most costly for the Mustangs (15-4-3).

Spring Lake (17-2-5) wound up outshooting Marian 11-8 overall, including 7-4 with shots on frame. The Mustangs did have a 4-2 edge on corners but could not break down Spring Lake’s defense on this day.

Senior Jessica Stewart made four saves in goal for the shutout – the biggest clean sheet of her four-year career as a varsity starter. She made a diving stop midway through the first half and actively patrolled the box all day in keeping Marian’s offense at bay.

Mertz recorded six saves on the afternoon for the Mustangs, including a kick-save off a shot from Andree early in the second half to keep the Lakers from extending their lead.

“I was talking earlier that I remember vividly getting scored on my freshman year in the state finals),” said Stewart. “I did not want to experience that again on this big of a stage.

“I think a lot of us were here as freshman and played, so we knew what to expect today." continued Stewart. “We watched a lot of film on Marian to be prepared for them the best we could. It was good that we lost to Marian our freshmen year because this was kind of like revenge for us. This was us in our comeback. We just talked about our game plan and what we wanted to do and we executed it.”

Only conceding three goals in six tournament games and only allowing 17 in 24 games overall in a season not only highlighted by district, regional and state championships, but many high quality wins and ties against top-15 competition. There are two starting seniors and a junior in the backfield along with Stewart, one of four fourth-year varsity performers.

“Thanks for reminding me. I’m going to miss them,” laughed May. “We met on the bus on the way here and I was very clear with them, and I hate to put the whole entire game in your guy’s lap but the reality is if we keep the ball out of the goal we’re going to win this game. Somehow the forwards are going to find a way and if they don’t and it goes to PKs, then we’re going to win that.”

The game didn’t go to penalties, and it didn’t see Spring Lake give up many chances. But it did see the Lakers end the season on top of the Division 2 pyramid.

“We’re on the map now,” laughed May.
