NORTON SHORES, Mich. – One of the longest league streaks in the state of Michigan continued Thursday night for Muskegon Mona Shores.
The Sailors girls soccer team beat Zeeland West 2-0 Thursday in the conference tournament finals of the eight-school Ottawa Kent Conference-Green Division championship game to clinch both the conference tournament championship and overall league crown.
Again.
Since 2017, the Sailors are 70-0-6 in conference play with seven straight outright Ottawa Kent Conference-Green Division championships (the first three were in the Black Division and last four in the OKC-Green), which is one of the longest streaks in the 48-school, six-division mega conference. The 2020 season was not played due to the Covid lockdowns, so that year is not counted.
Mona Shores has not lost a conference game since April of 2016 against Zeeland West.
Top-seeded and Division 1 13th-ranked Mona Shores (15-2-2) hosted that same Zeeland West team for the finals of this year’s tournament and came away with its sixth overall shutout against OKC-Green opponents – three in the regular season and three more in the conference tournament.
Calvin University-bound Shay Norden scored both goals for the Sailors in the second half. Lilly Houle and Braylin Meyers had the assists on the goals, while Jersey VanderWall made one save on the night and earned her 10th shutout of the season.
The Sailors also picked up great overall play came from Emma Anderson, Mal Hogston, Ava Freye, Ella Kinney and Katie Phillps.
Mona Shores finished 9-0-1 against conference teams this year – 6-0-1 in the regular season and 3-0 in the conference tournament, where they defeated Muskegon (12-0), Zeeland East (2-0) and now Zeeland West (2-0) to clinch the outright title. The Sailors outscored the conference tournament competition 16-0 and 38-5 in the seven-game regular league season.
Overall, Mona shores has outscored the opposition 70-15 this season with 10 total clean sheets and are 4-0-1 overall in its last five games where the Sailors hold a 18-1 scoring edge.
Mona Shores will travel to nearby arch-rival Muskegon Reeths-Puffer next Wednesday to face the Rockets in the first round of Division 1 district play. The Sailors tied Reeths-Puffer 1-1 in the league opener back on April 9.
