WATERFORD, Mich. – Motivation has been a driving force behind Birmingham Marian’s quest of reaching the state finals this season.
Last year the Mustangs were upset by eventual state champion and unranked Grosse Pointe North 3-2 in a shootout in the Division 2 regional semifinals. Marian went home with a collective bad taste in their mouths.
This time around the Mustangs are an experienced, motivated and focused bunch and posted another postseason win Wednesday at Waterford Kettering with a 1-0 victory over DeWitt in the Division 2 state semifinals.
The Mustangs have a long successful history of postseason success and that will continue this week. Marian has overcome last year’s early and unanticipated exit in the regional semifinals. The Mustangs were also knocked out of the conference tournament early this season.
Marian last tasted defeat on May 15 in the Catholic High School League-Bishop Tournament semifinals to fourth-seeded Bloomfield Hills Cranbrook Kingswood, 4-3. The Mustangs had five of their seniors miss the game due to the graduation ceremonies that evening, while two freshmen didn’t arrive until early in the second half due to mandatory AP testing.
“They do (remember that loss),” said Price of last year’s upset defeat to Grosse Pointe North. “I think coming off that Catholic League semifinal against Cranbrook again where we got beat. It hurt them. It really hurt them. From that point forward we said we weren’t going to be beaten. We’ll be resilient and we’re still together and we train hard, really hard. You can see it, those last 10 minutes there the other night against Trenton it was such industrial defending, win every ball in the air and chasing everything down. It was fantastic.”
The goal came seconds after a set piece, where the Mustangs have thrived this season.
“That’s been our M.O., really, the last three or four games,” admitted Price. “Tonight, we were a lot better getting in behind to create chances. They just wouldn’t fall for us (in open play). We had a couple of opportunities at the start (of the second half) and couldn’t score. We’re just dangerous on set pieces. It’s a positive for us.”
Four of the 10 goals the Mustangs allowed came in that short-handed game. Marian has not lost since that day, reeling off six straight postseason wins behind a 29-0 scoring edge.
“We’re peaking at the right time,” said Price.
And the caboose stoking the engine has anchored the back for one of the state’s top defenses and has been impenetrable force between the pipes during late May and June.
“We’ve always had our eyes on the prize,” offered senior goalkeeper Dani Mertz, who has not yielded a goal in a month. “A bunch of us upperclassmen have experienced this before, and we just really want to get back there again. It’s a dream come true that we’re going, but we’re not finished yet.”
Marian, which played Wednesday in the state’s Final Four for the 17th time in program history, advanced to Saturday’s 4 p.m. state finals at Michigan State University’s DeMartin Stadium for its 14th state finals appearance. The Mustangs (15-3-3) will face top-ranked and high-powered Spring Lake (16-2-3) in the state finals – and a rematch of the 2021 finals which Marian won with a 3-0 victory over the Lakers.
The Mustangs are 9-4 in state championship matches, rank third with 14 state finals appearances, third with nine state titles, seventh with four state runners-up finishes and rank fifth with 17 trips to the Final Four.
Marian was the state champion in 2021 with a 3-0 victory over Spring Lake while the Mustangs lost in the 2022 state finals to Grand Rapids Forest Hills Central (2-1). All nine state titles have come in the last 21 years and the four state runners-up finishes have come over the last 22 seasons. Marian, owners of 22 district trophies in its storied lore, has won four state titles in the last decade and has reached the state finals 14 times since 2002.
“Whatever teams come out of the west side they are always good,” said Price. “We found that out (in boys soccer) at (Birmingham) Brother Rice when we played Grand Rapids Christian. There’s always good teams that come out of there. I’m confident in our players and I believe in my players. We’ve got great history behind us. They are hungry right now and you can see it. Every single one of them they really want to make last year right. That was the first time in who knows how long. It was something like the (third time in 14 years) we hadn’t been to a state semifinal. I’m happy for them this year.”
Honorable mention in the rankings at the end of the regular season after spending some weeks in the top 15, DeWitt (13-5-6) has been a stout defensive team this season and only conceded 20 goals in 24 games with 10 shutouts. The Panthers, tri-champions of the Capital Area Athletic Conference-Blue Division, lost in the state semifinals for the sixth time in 14 years.
Junior Madison McDonald made seven saves in eight chances for DeWitt, which created just one shot offensively in the second half and struggled against the Mustangs’ stingy and aggressive backline.
“I’m so proud of these girls. Marian is always a strong program. I remember playing them when I was in high school (at DeWitt). Nothing’s changed and it’s always a battle whenever we play their team,” said DeWitt coach Erica Clement. “We had some injuries and we had to adjust a little this season. We started a little bit young, and our starting roster and our seniors have stepped up as well. To make it this far – it’s a team goal every year. But to actually make it this far with our team chemistry, it says a lot about these group of girls.”
Marian outshot DeWitt by a 14-3 margin, including 8-3 with shots on frame, and even held an 8-4 edge on cornerkicks. The Mustangs put constant pressure on DeWitt’s defense in the second half and were finally able to net the go-ahead goal in the second half.
“We talked about that at half,” said Price, whose team recorded their second straight 1-0 victory. “I think the message throughout the last game (a 1-0 victory over Trenton) is maturity, just calmness, and not playing with emotion. Just playing the game because when we do that, we’re really difficult to beat.”
It was a cornerkick that set up the game’s only goal. Sophomore Lily Robinson sent her corner into the box from the left side and the Mustangs were able to get a foot on three shots in five seconds. The first two were blocked by DeWitt defenders in the wild goal mouth scramble, but senior Madeline Stenger was there from 10 yards out to send the third shot through traffic and over near the left goal post with 27:04 remaining in the second half.
“We controlled it in the second half. Those halftime talks keep working,” smiled Price. “So, our second half is usually better than our first. I need to do something (different) at the start of the game.”
Mertz, a senior, was not called upon to make many saves, but she did stop DeWitt junior Ava Jacobsen cold on a breakaway in the 15th minute. Mertz recorded three saves on the night for her 15th shutout on the campaign and sixth of the state tournament.
Mertz and Marian’s stout defense has yet to concede a goal in the postseason and have only allowed 10 goals all season with a 0.48 team goals-against-average.
