GIRLS SOCCER: Kalamazoo Christian attempting to defend title with a ‘good problem to have’

KALAMAZOO, Mich. – Jay Allen had a dilemma at the start of this season.

While there’s the problems with trying to defend a state crown while Kalamazoo Christian – last year’s Division 4 state champion – have been playing with a large target on your backs the whole season. There's the problems associated with trying to replace your leading goal scorer from last year, All-State Dream Team selection Taylor Leonard, who is now playing for Hope College.

The problem lies in goal, where the Comets now have three quality goalkeepers.

While some coaches enter a season without a seasoned keeper or keeper at all, the veteran Allen has three – senior Elizabeth Netz, junior Kailey Triemstra and senior newcomer Ari Allen.

Netz, an All-State Honorable Mention choice last season, is a great story to tell, as she was converted to being a keeper after playing as a field player just before her freshman season. Netz worked her way up to being a quality netminder.

Triemstra is a quality backup the last couple of years and again this year, just abiding her time.

Ari Allen, the coach’s daughter, is the most decorated of them all. She’s already signed with NCAA Division I Holy Cross University but never played high school until this season. She’s been one of the top keepers the last several years with the prestigious Michigan Hawks ECNL youth club team traveling the country 10 months of the year.

“It’s kind of funny, but I guess it’s a good problem to have,” noted Coach Allen, the veteran mentor at Kalaamazoo Christian who has guided his team to multiple lengthy state tournament runs during his tenure. “We have a lot of girls who are good goalies.”

Problem solved. Netz returned to her starting position this season that ‘she has more than earned,’ according to Allen. And Triemstra is also getting valuable minutes for a team that has advanced to the season’s final weekend again this season with a fine 18-4-2 record.

Ari Allen has shed her goalie gloves to sprint on the field, playing forward or in the midfield in the Comets’ attack.

“Ari is playing college soccer, but I couldn’t have her come in a take that spot because she wasn’t on the team before and she’s a good goalie,” said Allen of his daughter. “The other goalie’s earned it. We’ll just have Ari play in the field because she’s a good athlete.”

The goalkeeper issue was solved months ago. It’s opposing teams that have had a problem trying to slow down the high-powered Comets, who entered the Division 4 state tournament ranked sixth and are 18-4-2 overall entering Friday. Kalamazoo Christian is playing in its sixth state title game in less than a decade and ninth overall and will face unranked Jackson Lumen Christi (13-7-0) at 1 p.m. at Michigan State University’s DeMartin Stadium.

The Comets have played a challenging schedule as a Division 4 top-10 team, finished as co-champions of the Southwestern Athletic Conference-Valley Division and then have gone on another run in the postseason.

“We’ll be alright,” joked Allen earlier this season.

Kalamazoo Christian has been more than alright. The Comets are a state powerhouse in the Division 4 circles.

Kalamazoo Christian defeated Clarkston Everest Collegiate/Sacred Heart Unified 5-0 in last year’s state title game, while the Comets also won titles in 2003, 2004, 2007 and 2008.

Kalamazoo Christian lost in the finals in 2017, 2018, 2019 and 2022. But will add some type of hardware to the trophy case this weekend.

The Comets still have plenty of holdover talent, plus some key newcomers that have more than filled some voids left by graduation and have been crucial to Kalamazoo Christian’s dominance.

The Comets did start slow at 1-3-1 where they were outscored 16-6, but that was against the likes of Division 2 ranked teams St. Joseph and Otsego and also a loss to defending Division 3 state champion Hudsonville Unity Christian. Kalamazoo Christian is 17-1-1 since with the only loss in that stretch coming against Division 2 Vicksburg (2-1) back on May 10, and Vicksburg was honorable mention in the polls.

Overall, the Comets own a 78-24 scoring edge with 13 shutouts this season – and again 16 of those goals allowed came in the first four games against much bigger schools. In the state tournament, Kalamazoo Christian has beat two top-10 teams and one school honorable mention in the rankings and have outscored the opposition 13-2 with two shutouts in the tournament to reach the finals.

Kalamazoo Christian brought back Netz this season, along with three-sport All-State athlete Jordyn Bonnema, who also excels in basketball and golf.

Senior Mackenzie Ling and junior Maysen Steensma are key players in the back. Transfers Emily Gorton and Alyssa Gorton, who used to attend elementary school at K’zoo Christian, moved back into the area last summer after playing at a high-level club and high school in the Chicago area the last couple of years. Sophomore Izzy Suloff leads the team in scoring as part of a balanced attack.

“We do have a lot of talent on this roster,” said Allen. “Sure, it’s always a goal to try to make a run. But it’s never easy. There’s a lot of good schools out there with a lot of talent, too. And we always end up playing a lot of ranked teams in the years when we were fortunate enough to make those runs.”
