EAST LANSING Mich. – Realistically, Randy Heethuis didn’t know what to expect this season.
Losing 12 players to graduation, another high-level player to ECNL club soccer and two others for various reasons, the 35-year veteran Hudsonville Unity Christian coach had more questions than answers once tryouts week arrived back in mid-March.
Unity Christian, which took over the top spot in the Division 3 state rankings in early April, remained in the spot the rest of the regular season and wound up earning its state-record tying 12th MHSAA state title – all during the last quarter century – with a resounding 3-0 victory over fifth-ranked Grosse Ile Saturday in the Division 3 state finals at Michigan State University’s DeMartin Stadium.
It was the second straight year that Unity Christian defeated Grosse Ile 3-0, and it was the third straight season Unity Christian reached the state finals. They lost to Williamston 3-2 in the 2022 state finals.
“We lost around 15 players that didn’t come back and had to replace a lot of talent, a lot of starters and some of our depth,” said Heethuis, who took over the program in 1990. “We came back with a good solid core and we came back here (for the third straight year). The youngsters came along, and they grew up seeing the system, how we play and what we like to do. They fit in very well,” said Heethuis. “They stepped up to pretty much every challenge. We had a tough schedule. They answered the bell.”
Miss Soccer candidate Ava Lutke finished with a goal and an assist in the win, setting up the first and third goals while scoring the second goal for the Crusaders (22-1-1). Defensively, it marked the second straight season that Unity Christian did not concede a goal in the postseason.
“We lost our three-year starting goalkeeper to graduation and we lost all of those defenders. We had to (reconstruct) our back line this year,” said Heethuis. “But they jelled together and were just great back there all season long. To come here and not allow a goal in the postseason two years in a row and to do it this year with a new defense is a tribute to those girls.”
The Crusaders, who made their 20th trip to the Final Four this season which is second all-time, are now 12-4 in state title games. Their 16 appearances in the state finals also ranks second in state history behind Bishop Foley’s 17 finals appearances.
“I don’t really care about that. I just go out there and coach each group,” said Heethuis. “Sure, we always try to go as far as we can. Some year we make it here and others we don’t But the record isn’t as important than seeing each group of kids experience this (winning a championship).”
Unity Christian scored on just its second shot attempt and first on frame to set the tone and never looked back.
Lutke raced down the left sideline and drew a couple of defenders over before slipping the ball into the middle of the box, where sophomore Emma Vruggink was left wide open with a sitter from six yards out and left no doubt on her opportunity.
That proved to be the game-winning goal, although the Crusaders were far from done on this day.
Unity Christian outshot Grosse Ile 30-3 on the day after collecting 33 shots in last year’s state finals. The Crusaders also held a 16-1 edge with shots on frame and picked up eight corner kicks while allowing Grosse Ile just two corners in the contest.
Unity Christian led 1-0 at the half and added an insurance tally with 29:25 to play. Coming off some dynamite possession with more than a dozen consecutive passes, sophomore Addi Pell slotted the ball through traffic over to Lutke, who blasted home a shot from the 10 yards out and just inside the left post.
Unity Christian scored again less than two minutes later, as Lutke set up sophomore Tessa Ponstein with a 21-yard shot which she laced into the back of the net.
“This is amazing come here for three years in a row. We lost when I was a freshman, but we won it two in a row,” smiled Lutke, who has already committed to Michigan State. “And doing it here at MSU because this is where I’ll play at in college is pretty special.”
Senior Anna Newhof, who was a backup the last couple of years, made just one save with 22:50 left in the game, while junior Kennidee Crump subbed in with 11:45 left to complete the Crusaders’ 15th clean sheet of the season.
Unity Christian finishes with a 110-11 scoring edge this season and only Division 1 top-ranked Hudsonville was able to score more than one goal on the Crusaders.
Grosse Ile (17-3-5) lost in the finals two years in a row after knocking on the doorstep with regional finals and state semifinals losses several times in the past. The Red Devils brought back most of its roster from the 2023 squad but couldn’t solve the Rubix Cube of Unity Christian.
“They’re such a great program and they have so many talented players. I know they lost some girls but you wouldn’t know it,” said sixth-year Grosse Ile coach Kyle Lesperance. “I’m proud of my girls for making it back here. That was the goal for Day 1. Last year I think it was a little bit of a surprise but not this year. We wanted to get back here and we wanted another chance to play them. They are very good. We just struggled to get anything going offensively and that’s a credit to Unity.”
