EAST LANSING, Mich. – Jackson Lumen Christi did not have to control play or dominate Friday. The unranked Titans just had to be good enough.

Lumen Christi was good enough and its defense was stout down the stretch this season, especially on the final day of the Division 4 season.

Making just its second appearance in the state finals and first since 2000, Lumen Christi went on an unexpected run which resulted in the school’s first state championship. The Titans prevailed 2-1 over defending state champion and sixth-ranked Kalamazoo Christian in a game decided on penalty kicks – where Lumen Christi held a 3-1 advantage.

Senior goalkeeper Izzy Ermatinger finished with seven saves over 100 minutes of open play, including two full 10-minute overtime periods. In the shootout, she saved the Comets’ first, second and fourth shooters to help lift her team to a midfield jubilee.

“We felt all along we could do this,” said Ermatinger, who would not let in on her secret of how she could tell what way Kalamazoo Christian’s shooters would go during the shootout. “I could tell. I won’t say.

“But we are the state champions and that’s what matters,” she added.

Lumen Christi (14-7-0) made a conference switch last summer, moving from the Interstate 8 Athletic Conference over to the Catholic High School League where the Titans landed in the CHSL-AA Division for girls soccer. Lumen Christi placed fifth and did not even make the CHSL Bishop Tournament.

The upgrade in competition sure lifted the Titans to new levels this season.

“I think it really paid off for us,” smiled Lumen Christi coach Blake Newman-Gillis. “We played a lot of very good teams. We even lost to some of those teams early in the season. We lost to (Royal Oak) Shrine early in the season 5-0 but we faced them again in the regional finals and were able to beat them 2-0. We are a completely different team right now than we were in the season.

“I said at the end of last season that we were bringing just about everyone back and I thought if we could put it together we could contend for a state championship,” said Newman-Gillig. “We did just that, put it all together and made a run.”

In the Division 4 state tournament, the Titans elevated their game when it mattered most. Lumen Christi defeated four top-10 teams to close the season, including No. 5 Manchester, No. 2 Shrine, No. 8 Auburn Hills Oakland Christian and No. 6 Kalamazoo Christian. The Titans only conceded two goals in seven  postseason games and only five goals in their last 10 games.

“We tried some different alignments the first half of the season but nothing worked,” said Newman-Gillig. “We finally switched to a 4-3-3 and it began to work better.”

At one point, the Titans were 3-5-0 and outscored 25-19 before righting the ship. Lumen Christi closed with a nine-game win streak and outscored its seven postseason opponents by a 24-2 margin. In comparison, Lumen Christi only outscored its opponents 34-32 in the regular season and even dropped a 2-1 decision to Kalamazoo Christian in a non-conference game in mid-May.

It marks Kalamazoo Christian’s 10th trip to the state championship game, but the Comets slipped to 5-5 in those contests.

Kalamazoo Christian controlled play for over 80 percent of this state finals contest while Lumen Christi only subbed one time in the second half and overtime and even had a hard time clearing the ball from its half of the field. It did not matter.

The Comets fell behind early and never led in the game. Kalamazoo Christian controlled play for most of the first half but fell behind just 3:52 into the contest.

Lumen Christi junior forward Paityn Petitto sent a long serve from the center of the park to an onrushing sophomore forward Codi Ruge who split defenders before uncorking her breakaway shot top-shelf from 19 yards out.

Kalamazoo Christian outshot Lumen Christi 16-9, including 8-7 with shots on frame, and even held a 6-2 edge on cornerkicks. The Comets finally netted an equalizer with 38:41 remaining in the second half when senior Phoebe Zeyl’s long serve into the box and chased down by senior Ari Allen, who ripped her shot into the left side from 12 yards out.

The Comets continued to flood the Titans’ side of the field with waves of attacks, crosses, corners and shots all while dominating possession down the stretch but simply could not net a go-ahead goal.

“That’s the way it goes sometimes,” conceded Kalamazoo Christian coach Jay Allen, who only graduates six of his 26 players. “I thought we dominated play for long stretches and had our fair share of chances. But we couldn’t get it done. I’m not a big fan of shootouts, either. But what can you do differently? Bring back golden goal or play until there is a winner? I don’t know what the answer is.

“We are a young team and I think scoring goals was a problem for us at times this season,” continued Allen. “We are used to the Kalamazoo Christian offense beating teams by three or four goals to get to the finals. This year we won a bunch of one-goal games (three) in the tournament and most of our tournament games were close.”

In the shootout, Lumen Christi’s Ermatinger, Paige Lefere and Paityn Pettito converted the Titans’ first three attempts but they missed their fourth. Ermatinger stopped Kalamazoo Christian’s Alyssa Gorton on the Comet’s fourth shot to seal the deal.

Lumen Christi’s defense, led by junior and NCAA Division I University of North Carolina-Asheville commit Kathleen Doane, stifled the Comets attack for long stretches. Ermatinger did her part in the end.

Ari Allen made the only shot in the shootout for Kalamazoo Christian, who made their sixth appearance in the finals in the past decade. The Comets also lost in a shootout in 2017.

“I did not want to go to (penalty kicks),” said Newman-Gillig. “You never know what could happen if you play for penalties. The other team could score and then you have to play catch up. We were tired at the end and we struggled to get much going (in the second half and overtime), but we stepped up and make those shots (in the shootout) and Izzy came through for us.”
