EAST LANSING, Mich. – Birmingham Marian and Spring Lake actually have a lot in common these days.
Not only did the two programs square off in the 2021 Division 2 state title game won by Marian (3-0), the Mustangs and Lakers are the only two schools to be ranked No. 1 in the state in D-2 at times this season – Marian the first half and Spring Lake the second half.
Both teams also spent time at No. 1 during the 2023 campaign, but neither side reached the state finals. Marian was upset in the regional semifinals by unranked Grosse Pointe North (3-2 in a shootout) and North went on to win a state title. Spring Lake lost in the regional finals to East Grand Rapids (2-0) in the regional finals and East Grand Rapids eventually finished as the) state runner-up.
This time around both teams have remained in the top 10 all year, as top-ranked Spring Lake (16-2-5) will be making its second state finals appearance and eighth-ranked Marian (15-3-3) will be making its 14th finals appearance and is going after its 10th title over the last 21 years.
But on the field, the two teams are different. It will be a contrasting styles out on the pitch Saturday afternoon at Michigan State University’s DeMartin Stadium. The Division 2 state finals clash will begin at 4 p.m. and will feature the Mustangs’ stout defense and the Lakers’ high-powered and speedy offense.
Marian is always a great team. They have been here so many times,” conceded eighth-year Spring Lake coach Becky May. “We hope to give them a great game and I expect it to be a great game featuring two of the top teams in the state.
“I know they don’t give up a lot of goals. And oh, man, the set pieces. They are always known for their set pieces,” continued May. “They are very tough and we’ll have to defend them (well on restarts).”
Danny Price is in his first season at Birmingham Marian. The former English professional soccer player has coached the last few years with the boys soccer team at neighboring Birmingham Brother Rice and has coached in the club circuit with Liverpool FC International Academy for several years.
“There’s always some really good teams coming from the west side in boys and girls soccer. We saw that (three) years ago (in boys soccer) at Brother Rice with Grand Rapids Christian,” said Price. “There’s so many good teams out there. (Spring Lake) has been here before, too. It’s the state finals and it doesn’t matter which west side team is there because a lot of them are very good.”
Marian, which recently finished as the state runner-up in 2022 following a 2-0 loss to Grand Rapids Forest Hills Central and won the 2021 state title with its victory over Spring Lake, has scored 61 goals this season, although 16 came in a mercy-shortened 16-0 victory over Detroit Renaissance in the pre-districts. The Mustangs have only allowed 10 goals all year and four of them came in the Catholic High School League-Bishop Tournament semifinals to Bloomfield Hills Cranbrook-Kingswood (4-3). The Mustangs were missing five senior starters in that game and had two freshmen arrive in the second half after having some mandatory testing that afternoon.
Marian has not lost since and have not conceded a single goal since that mid-May loss to Cranbrook. The Mustangs have outscored their six postseason opponents 29-0 but are coming off back-to-back 1-0 wins over highly-regarded Trenton and DeWitt.
Senior goalkeeper Dani Mertz has been sterling leading the team’s defense that has a 0.48 team goals-against-average. Nadia Valka, Lily Robinson, Olivia Zanhow and Abby Walton have been the regular starting back four throughout much of the season.
Clair Dauer is one of the state’s top sophomores and directs the offense from her attacking center midfielder position. Dauer has 15 goals and two assists, Giulianna Agrusso has 10 goals and three assists and Nia Bordogna has five goals and 10 assists. There are only four seniors on this roster.
Spring Lake has four fourth-year varsity veterans and 10 seniors that are hungry to take a championship trophy back to the Muskegon area this weekend.
Clara Saunders (22 goals, 10 assists) and Ella Andree (12 goals, six assists) are two of those fourth-year seniors playing in their second state finals. Freshman Aveya Patino is one of the state’s more productive ninth-grade talents with 27 goals and seven assists. Seniors Clara Howe and Kyle Shelton and Kiele Stephenson are also seasoned veterans.
Senior goalkeeper Jessica Stewart is a fourth-year starter and one of four players that will be on college rosters in the fall. Stewart has played in 19.5 games this season and has 11 of her team’s 12 shutouts. Senior Ella Rabideau is the other fourth-year star and is one of the starting defenders on the roster along with Brooke Bolthouse and Lauren Nicles. The defensive unit has a 0.74 team goals-against-average.
