GIRLS SOCCER: Are You Experienced? Spring Lake seniors in the midst of another long tournament journey

SPRING LAKE, Mich. – Jessica Stewart didn’t even think she would make the varsity as a freshman three years ago.

But the goalkeeper did just that in 2021, and she started many games that memorable that season for Spring Lake High School. Ditto for three of her talented classmates at Spring Lake – speedy midfielder Elle Andree, outside back Ella Rabideau and midfielder Clara Saunders, one of the top-players in the Lakers’ league, the depth-laden Ottawa Kent Conference-Blue Division, and the district as well.

The Lakers made a deep run in the Division 2 state tournament and eventually finished as the state runner-up after falling in the Division 2 state finals to longtime powerhouse Birmingham Marian (3-0).

Spring Lake’s other journey to the Final Four ended in the 2013 state semifinals when Stewart and Co. were in early elementary school some 11 years ago, as the Lakers lost to eventual state champion Richland-Gull Lake (1-0) in overtime in the state semifinals that year.

But as for this unpredictable four-year run the Lakers are enjoying?

“I remember when I came in here that I really didn’t think I’d make varsity. I don’t know if I felt any of us (then-freshmen) would make it because we had some really good players when I was a freshman,” admitted Stewart, who is now one of the top goalkeepers in school history. “But we made it and it was a great season.

“We made it all the way to the (state) finals and it was a great experience,” added Stewart. “Even though we lost in the finals, we gained some great experience that year.”

All four of the fourth-year varsity veterans have raked in some postseason accolades this year at the All-League and All-District levels, along with the likes of several other talented players such as seniors Brooke Bolthouse (CB), Kyle Shelton (F), Clara Howe (M/F) and Kylie Stephenson (OB), juniors Lauren Nicles (M), Nia Theune (D) and Naomi Force (M/F), sophomore Lucia Folkert (D) and freshman Aveya Patino (F), who is actually the leading goal scorer this season.

Saunders, Andree, Stewart, Bolthouse and Patino earned All-League First Team honors this year, while Rabideau and Nicles were All-League Honorable Mention. Several others were either All-District or All-District Honorable Mention.

The further the Lakers advance in the tournament this year, the more likely several players will earn some type of All-State recognition or All-Region status as well.

Saunders was also All-State First Team last season, while Andree and Stewart were All-State Second-Team, and senior center back Brooke Bolthouse was All-State Honorable Mention last season, not to mention all of the other Lakers that earned All-League or All-District honors last season.

College-wise, Stewart will play in the fall at Muskegon Community College, while Andree will suit up for NAIA Saint Mary’s College-Notre Dame, Shelton will play at NCAA Division II Davenport University and Howe will compete for NAIA Savannah School of Art & Design.

“Those four girls have chosen to play in college and I’m proud of them,” admitted Spring Lake head coach Becky May. “We have several other girls who are talented enough to play in college and had offers but chose not to play next year. Clara Saunders definitely could play in college but is going to (the University of Michigan) and will just be a student. A few other of our other seniors could play, too.”

Now with a senior-heavy, experienced and talented roster featuring numerous fourth- and third-year varsity veterans sprinkled with some talented underclassmen – and even the aforementioned college recruits – and Division 2 top-ranked Spring Lake has made its third-ever run to the Final Four this season following the school’s 3-2 victory on Thursday over Midland in the regional finals – a level the Lakers have reached four straight times.

Spring Lake, the top-ranked team in Division 2, is one of a handful of talented teams that have reached at least the Elite Eight the last four season, joining Portage Central (Division 1), Kalamazoo Christian (Division 4) and Hudsonville Christian (Division 3) as the only teams in Michigan in all four MHSAA divisions combined to compete in at least the regional finals in 2021, 2022, 2023 and 2024.

Spring Lake lost in the regional finals in 2022 to Grand Rapids Forest Hills Central (3-0) and again to East Grand Rapids (2-0) in the regional finals in 2023.

Spring Lake lost in the regional finals in 2022 to Grand Rapids Forest Hills Central (3-0) and again to East Grand Rapids (2-0) in the regional finals in 2023.

Spring Lake has outscored the opposition 70-18 entering the Final Four this season and have posted 11 shutouts. The Lakers (15-2-5) have averaged scoring 3.19 goals a game, have allowed a stout 0.82 goals a game and registered shutouts in 50 percent of their games (11-for-22) entering the state semifinals.

“We have had a great season and we hope we can continue it,” said Saunders. “I know we would love to get back to the finals and have another chance. We lost to (Birmingham) Marian as freshmen and lost in the (regional finals) the past two years. This is our last shot at it.”

Spring Lake has played a brutally-tough league and non-schedule that has featured numerous top-15 state ranked teams or schools listed as honorable mention in the coaches association rankings list. The Lakers didn’t even win their league, finishing second in the regular season to Division 3 top-ranked Hudsonville Unity Christian and reached the Ottawa Kent Conference-Blue Division Tournament finals before tying Unity Christian (1-1) to finish second overall in the eight school standings with a combined 7-1-2 record.

Even in the three games that Spring Lake didn’t score a goal they tied Division 1 eighth-ranked Rockford (0-0) in the season opener way back on March 21, lost to Unity Christian (3-0) in just the third game of the season in early April, and tied Division 1 `13th-ranked and OKC-Green Division champ Muskegon Mona Shores on May 6 and that was part of a stretch where the Lakers pitched seven shutouts and only conceded seven games in a 10-game stretch.

“Our schedule has been really tough,” offered May. “We have played against several (state-ranked) teams and played well in those games. Even in our losses we played well. We lost to (Grand Rapids) South Christian by a goal late in the regular season (in a non-league game) and our loss to Unity Christian was really early in the season. Even our ties were against really good teams. Overall, I can’t complain with how we’ve played overall this season because we have played so many good teams.”

The OKC-Blue Division was loaded this season – Spring Lake, Holland Christian and Hudsonville Unity Christian all reached the Final Four – and the division is stacked with NCAA Division I and NCAA Division II players, not too mention that league members Grand Rapids West Catholic, Coopersville and Hamilton all spent time ranked in the top-15 in the state or listed as honorable mention in the rankings this season.

In the state tournament, Spring Lake has won all four contest to reach the Final Four and will play league foe Holland Christian Wednesday night in the state semifinals. The Lakers have outscored the opposition 15-3 with two clean sheets in the state tournament, topping Sparta (8-0), Allendale (2-0, No. 7-ranked Grand Rapids Forest Hills Central (2-1 in a shootout) and third-ranked Midland (3-2) in the regional finals.

And low and behold Spring Lake will take its 15-2-5 overall record, highly-regarded roster and deep resume into the Final Four where it will face OKC-Blue Division member Holland Christian (10-8-1), which has come on strong and won perhaps the hardest of the four regional titles. That state semifinals game will be June 12 at 6 p.m. at Holland High School.

For Elle Andree, playing with her friends and having so much success is a dream come true. So would be finishing on top of the pyramid on June 15 if the Lakers can reach the state finals for a second time in four years.

“This has been a fun four years and I couldn’t ask for better teammates,” said Andree. “We’;ve made so many memories and had so much (success).

“I know we would love another shot (at playing in the state finals,” added Andree. “We came close as freshmen but I think we might be even better this year. If we can get (to the finals), this could be our best chance.”
