FRIDAY’S PREP GIRLS SOCCER ROUNDUP: Ovid-Elsie records fifth straight shutout; Trenton, Grosse Ile draw; Saugatuck on 29-0 scoring run

OVID, Mich. – Ovid-Elsie inched one step closer to a potential league championship in the Mid-Michigan Activities Conference.

The Marauders took down Byron 7-0 Friday evening in conference play to remain perfect at 5-0-0 in the league and 8-2-2 overall.

Montrose (9-1-1, 6-1-1) is also engaged into what is now just a two-horse race in the conference, which has six teams competing this spring.

Seven different players scored goals for Ovid-Elsie, who saw Ave Bates (one save) and Sarah Newman (three saves) combined for the shutout. It is the fifth straight clean sheet and sixth overall for the Marauders, who now own a 46-5 scoring edge on the season.


TRENTON 0, GROSSE ILE 0: Two of the most successful girls soccer programs from the downriver area of Michigan squared off Friday in a non-league contest and both teams turned in sterling defensive efforts in the match. Trenton, ranked in Division 2, moved to 10-2-2 overall, while Grosse Ile, ranked in Division 3, moved to 8-1-5.


SAUGATUCK 8, COLOMA 0: X Rewa scored two goals with two assists and Saugatuck cruised to this Southwestern Athletic Conference Lakeshore Division victory Friday. Cecelia Adkins also netted the brace and assisted on two other tallies, and both Ellory Panepento and Alina Martinson had single goals for the winners. Kennedy Gustafson was called up to make just one save for the shutout for the Trailblazers (9-2-2, 4-0-1), who are tied for the league lead halfway through with Holland Black River Academy at 4-0-1 in conference play. It marked the sixth straight shutout for Saugatuck, who own a 29-0 scoring edge in the six-game span and a 51-22 edge overall for the season. The Trailblazers started 0-2-1 and were outscored 16-3 by larger schools before righting their ship.
