In most countries, the sport we know as soccer is called football. So why is it called soccer in the U.S.? The answer lies in history.

The term "soccer" comes from an abbreviation of association football, which was the official name for the sport when it was codified in England in the late 1800s. The word “soccer” comes from the “-er” suffix added to "assoc" (from association) to distinguish it from other types of football, like rugby football.

In the U.S., where American football (a completely different sport) was already popular, the name "soccer" stuck. While most of the world switched to calling it "football," the U.S., along with Canada, Australia, and New Zealand, continued using "soccer" to avoid confusion with their own versions of football.

Today, the U.S. is one of the few places where "soccer" is still the common term, even as the sport grows in popularity here.

Now you know why we call it soccer instead of football!
