BY KENNEDY BROADWELL
PMG-MSN CORRESPONDENT
In 1969, a soccer match between El Salvador and Honduras sparked a brief but intense war.
The two countries were competing for a spot in the 1970 World Cup, and after Honduras won the qualifier 3-0 in June, violent riots broke out. Tensions between the nations had been building for years due to political and social issues, including migration and land disputes.
On July 14, just weeks after the game, El Salvador launched a military offensive against Honduras. The conflict, known as the Football War or the War of 100 Hours, lasted only four days but resulted in hundreds of deaths. A ceasefire was brokered by the Organization of American States (OAS) on July 18, ending the fighting.
The war is called the Football War because the soccer match acted as a catalyst for an underlying political crisis, though the actual causes of the conflict were far more complex.
Despite its brief duration, the war left a lasting impact on both countries and serves as a reminder of how something as simple as a game can escalate into a major conflict.
