In soccer, own goals are an unfortunate, yet semi-common occurrence, and one surprising way they can happen is from a corner kick. While you can’t directly score an own goal from a penalty, it is possible to do so from a corner — though it’s relatively rare.

An own goal from a corner typically occurs when a defender or goalkeeper accidentally puts the ball into their own net. If the ball is deliberately played by the defending team after the corner, but they fail to clear it properly — perhaps with a misjudged header or a deflection — and the ball goes into their own goal, it’s officially recorded as an own goal. This is the most common scenario.

Interestingly, you can also score an own goal directly from the corner kick itself, though this is even rarer. If the corner-taker kicks the ball and it curves directly into the net without anyone else touching it, it can count as an own goal if the ball ends up in the taker's own team’s net. For example, a poorly struck corner that catches the wind or is kicked with too much force could unexpectedly result in an own goal.

In either case, the goal is credited to the defending team, since they are responsible for their own goal. So, while scoring an own goal from a corner is an unusual occurrence, it's certainly within the rules of the game — another reminder of how soccer can produce some truly bizarre moments.
