Northern Michigan University junior midfielder Kenna Alexander unleashes this shot for the Wildcats, who dropped a 4-1 decision in an NCAA Division II opening-round tournament game.
Fifth-seeded Panthers break game open with two late first-half goals and never allow the fourth-seeded Wildcats to recover
ASHLAND, Ohio – For Northern Michigan University, it wasn’t meant to be this time around.
Drury University had a say in that – a huge say.
Drury drubbed Northern Michigan 4-1 Saturday in the NCAA Division II Round of 48 to advance to face host Ashland University on Sunday.
The Panthers scored the game’s first three goals and never trailed in the contest to advance and end Northern Michigan’s season.
Enjoying one of its best seasons in school history, the fourth-seeded Wildcats couldn’t match up with the No. 5 seed Panthers in seeing their seasons come to a sudden and premature halt. The game was played under a blustering wind, driving rain and chilly temperatures and Drury University more than chilled down the 14-4-4 Wildcats.
Andrea Camargo (27:38) scored her first goal of the season off a Andrea Camargo assist and Keira Love netted her first tally of the campaign at 40:29, an unassisted goal off a steal which proved to be the game-winner. The Panthers were not done in the first half.
Drury broke Northern Michigan’s back with a third goal before halftime and second goal in less than two minutes. Carmago netted her third goal of the season off a pass from Ines Villanueava Casal at the 41:53 mark and just 1:24 after the Panthers’ second goal to give Drury the 3-0 cushion at the half.
The Wildcats finally broke through at 49:34 when Kenna Alexander blasted home her scoring opportunity following passes from Maria Storm and Hannah Kastamo, good for her second goal of the campaign. The was the last ray of hope that Northern Michigan would enjoy.
Drury University scored a fourth goal at the 81:23 mark with Northern Michigan pushing up additional attackers to try to get a second and third goals which never happened. Mel Schneider scored just her second goal of the season to cap the scoring.
Drury outshot NMU 17-16 overall in the contest, including 9-7 with shots on goal. Northern Michigan held a narrow 5-4 edge off cornerkicks butcould not use those set pieces to their advantage.
Katy Fitzler recorded six saves in net for the win for the Panthers (15-2-4). Sally Patton made five saves in nine chances for Northern Michigan.
