Western Michigan University graduate midfielder Owen Smith and the Broncos saw their 2024 season come to an end Sunday with a 2-1 loss to top-ranked Ohio State University.
Buckeyes overcome 1-0 deficit to oust Broncos 2-1 in NCAA second round
COLUMBUS, Ohio – The end of the road has arrived for Western Michigan University men's soccer team.
The Broncos could not find a way to dethrone Ohio State University from atop the NCAA Division I polls, as the host Buckeyes fought off WMU to a 2-1 win Sunday in the NCAA Division I Round of 32 at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium.
Graduate student midfielder Owen Smith scored the lone goal for Western Michigan. Smith tucked one home, his sixth goal of the season, following passes from Greyson Mercer and Emiel Nieuwhof at the 32:55 mark.
The Broncos (12-3-6) could not hold off the nation’s No. 1-ranked team.
Ohio State picked a late first-half goal when Siggi Magnusson netted his fourth goal of the season off a cross from Nathan Demian at the 40:59 mark to tie the game at 1-1 heading into halftime.
The Buckeyes finally scored the go-ahead and eventual game-winning goal at 64:35 when Michael Adedokun netted his ninth goal of the season in unassisted manner to put Ohio State up for good.
The game-winning tally was the Buckeyes’ 48th goal of the season, breaking a 41-year-old school record of 47 goals set back in 1983.
Ohio State (15-1-3) doubled up Western Michigan with an 18-9 shots edge, including 5-4 with shots on target. The Buckeyes held a 9-2 advantage off cornerkicks, including 7-2 in the first half, but could not take advantage of all of the set pieces by the flags.
Western Michigan had reached the Sweet 16 the last two years. Making its fourth NCAA appearance in eight seasons, the Broncos reached the postseason tournament a program record three straight years and recorded wins in all three tournaments. This time WMU came up one win short of reaching the Round of 16 for the third year in a row.
Ohio State, which improved to 8-1-1 against teams that qualified for this year’s NCAA Division I Tournament, advances to the Sweet 16 and will host No. 16-seeded Stanford University Dec. 1 at 5 p.m. The Buckeyes take a four-game win streak into that match.
Ohio State now owns a 48-18 scoring edge this season with nine clean sheets.
Western Michigan concludes its 11th season under the leadership of coach Chad Wiseman. The Broncos outscored the opposition 46-20 this season with five shutouts and only two shutouts against the team.
