ANN ARBOR, Mich. – Behind a goal in each half, the University of Michigan is marching onward in the NCAA Division I men’s soccer tournament.

The Wolverines, making their first NCAA tournament appearance since the 2019 season, blanked visiting Robert Morris University 2-0 Thursday night at the U-M Soccer Stadium to advance to the Round of 32.

Both of the goals came from players that scored their first goal of the season. Talk about coming through in the clutch.

Sophomore back Matt Fisher (Rochester Hills/Sporting KC) scored what proved to be the game-winning goal in the 13th minute. Collecting a short pass from Bryce Blevins, Fisher banged home a shot at the 12:05 mark to put the Wolverines up 1-0.

The lead stood at 1-0 until the 80th minute. This time Duilio Herrera finished off a cross from Murphy Parker at the 79:18 mark to cap the scoring.

Michigan went on to outshoot the Colonials 9-5 overall, while both teams traded off four shots on frame in the match. The Wolverines also held a 9-2 edge off cornerkicks.

Josh Lane picked up the shutout in net for Michigan (9-4-7), making four saves for his team’s eighth clean sheet of the campaign.

Sophomore Isaiah Goldson finished with two saves in four chances for Robert Morris (9-7-3). The Colonials were making their first appearance in the NCAA Division I postseason since 2005 when they won the Northeast Conference.

Michigan will face University of Dayton at 7 p.m. Sunday night (Nov. 24) when the Wolverines take on the host Fliers at Baujon Field. The game will be aired live on ESPN+.
