Cardinals gain superb team defensive effort, outlast Hillcats 4-2 on PKs to move on to the Sweet 16
UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. – Ryan Bovee stepped up to the penalty spot and left no doubt.
The Clarkston High School grad blasted home his PK during a shootout, which proved to be the deciding factor in Saginaw Valley State University’s 1-0 victory over visiting Rogers State University in an NCAA Division II Championships Tournament second-round game Sunday at SVSU.
The Cardinals prevailed 4-2 in the penalty-kick shootout after the two teams were tied after 90 minutes of regulation and two overtime periods – 110 minutes in total. It marked the second game the Cardinals emerged victorious via a shootout, including in the GLIAC conference tournament finals against Roosevelt University the previous weekend.
After Alex Demorow (Allen Park) was stopped on his first attempt in the shootout, SVSU didn’t miss as Fransisco Capellan, Matty Telfer, Nick Kay and Bovee drilled their attempts from the spot.
Erik Hjertsson (second) and Louis Basseti (fourth) made their penalties for Rogers State, but the Hillcats’ Declan Viljoen (first) and Brandon O’Rourke (third) saw their attempts stopped by Saginaw Valley State junior goalkeeper Nick Kay.
Kay, the Walled Lake Central graduate, recorded six saves in the match prior to the shootout. His counterpart, Declan Viljoen, recorded five saves for Rogers State University (9-6-6), which hails from Claremore, Oklahoma. Saginaw Valley State defender Alex Demorow also cleared two shots off the goal line for the Cardinals to help seal the dramatic victory for the Cardinals. Rogers State defender Alex Fletcher also made a huge save with his foot to block a SVSU shot from crossing the line during the game.
"I think those defensive players are as good and as big as goals. They are so important and it's moments like that from AD that are the reason we haven't conceded many goals this season. We've been very stingy at the back and it's because of players like AD and the characteristics he brings to the team,” said Saginaw Valley State head coach Louis Barrow.
Rogers State held a 21-13 overall shots advantage in the game, including 8-5 with shots on goal, while both teams traded off five cornerkicks in the contest.
Saginaw Valley State has now outscored the opposition 30-16 this season with eight shutouts and lowered its team goals-against-average down to 0.85 after this sterling defensive effort.
The Cardinals advance to the Sweet 16 and will host Tiffin University next Sunday (Dec. 1) at Robert C. Braddock Field beginning at 1 p.m. Saginaw Valley State defeated Tiffin 3-2 back on Sept. 12.
