TRAVERSE CITY, Mich. – Traverse City West has one of the more explosive offenses in the state.
But even though Midland Dow was able to slow down the Titans’ high-powered machine, it was still not enough to completely ground the Titans.
Senior Aidan Orth scored a ninth-minute goal off a cross from senior Jaiden Collins, and the Titans’ defense held on as Traverse City West upended visiting Midland Dow 1-0 Tuesday in a Division 1 district semifinals match.
Junior Camden Tkach made five saves, including one huge stop in the final 10 minutes, to lift the Titans into Saturday’s 1 p.m. district championship match in Traverse City.
Traverse City West, winners of 14 straight games, improve to 16-1-2 on the season and are one win away from a fifth straight district title. The Titans, who recorded their 11th shutout of the season, have outscored their opposition 79-4 during their 14-game win streak and 80-5 in their 15-game unbeaten streak which began in a 1-1 tie against Oxford back on Aug. 23.
Overall for the season, Traverse City West now owns an 84-8 advantage on the scoreboard. The Titans are now going after their sixth straight district championship. If TC West can get by TC Central on Saturday, it will mark the school's 17th district title since the school opened its doors in 1997.
Evan Pheiffer made 10 saves in a losing effort for Midland Dow (9-10-3). The Chargers last won this northern D-1 district back in 2018.
TRAVERSE CITY CENTRAL 3, SAGINAW HERITAGE 2: The Trojans lost to Traverse City West twice this season, including 4-0 and 5-1 back in September during Big North Conference play. Now they’ll get a chance at redemption this weekend.
Traverse City Central held off high-powered Saginaw Heritage Tuesday night in a Division 1 district semifinals clash to advance to Saturday’s 1 p.m. district finals against the seventh-ranked Titans (16-1-2).
Geordie Richmond scored twice with an assist to pace TC Central (13-3-0). Cielan Blakeslee also scored for the Trojans, who are 6-2-0 in their last eight games with both losses coming against TC West.
Traverse City Central boasts a 72-18 scoring edge this season with the only other loss coming against Holland West Ottawa (3-1) back on the third game of the season on Aug. 23. The Trojans have been outscored 12-2 in their three losses this season but have outscored their other 13 opponents 70-6 with eight clean sheets.
Ayaan Cheema and Alex Jaffe scored for Saginaw Heritage, which finished 13-5-3 overall. The Hawks had one of the better offenses in Division 1 this season after outscoring their opposition 89-25 only to come up short against TC Central.
This district boasts three of the top 10 best offenses in Division 1 with Traverse City West, Saginaw Heritage and Traverse City Central all producing offenses that have scored over 75 goals on the season.
