MUSKEGON, Mich. – Few schools have put together as lengthy of a resume on the soccer pitch over the years as Muskegon Western Michigan Christian.
In any division, in any conference and under any governing body.
Ever since becoming the first team in the Muskegon area to bring in soccer as a club back in 1968 and later establishing a varsity sport in the 1970s, the Warriors have added to their championship lore decade after decade.
This year’s Division 4 MHSAA state title by MWMC was not only the third straight state crown, but the school’s 10th overall in the MHSAA tournament (Division 4, Class C-D or Class D). The school also captured a Class C-D state title in the old Michigan Suburban Soccer Coaches Association in 1981 one year before the MHSAA adopted the sport before the 1982 season.
It’s no surprise that the state champion Warriors pulled off the rare three-peat – the first school to do so since Birmingham Detroit Country Day won eight straight in the late 1980s and early 1990s – and also landed four players on the Michigan High School Soccer Coaches Association Division 4 All-State First Team. That is more than any other school in Division 4.
That in itself is a difficult feat considering how many quality teams and players there are in each of the state’s four divisions and beyond.
Below are the player capsules for all of the 2024 MIHSSCA Division 4 All-State First Team selection, as selected by a panel of coaches. Players are only eligible for All-District, All-State and All-Region honors if there coach is a member of the MIHSSCA:
DIVISION 4 ALL-STATE FIRST TEAM
Forwards
TAKALEGN VLASMA, Muskegon Western Michigan Christian sr. F: Although a knee injury sidelined him for the latter part of his sophomore season, the lightning-quick Vlasma was on the roster of three straight Division 4 state championship teams, and the last two as a starter the entire season. Last year, he was All-State Second Team and this year he made the jump to All-State First Team status. As a senior, Vlasma collected a team-leading 27 goals with five assists for 54 points, netted two hattricks, and also helped the Warriors to a 15-7-3 record despite playing numerous Division 1, Division 2 and Division 3 schools as an independent this year before the Division 4 state tournament. Vlasma was also a two-time All-District, All-Region and All-Muskegon Area performer. He is uncertain if he will play soccer collegiately and is also considering aviation school in the future to become a pilot.
OWEN RESCH, Lansing Christian sr. M/F: If the stats don’t pass the eye test, perhaps his team’s level of play and his recruitment surely has caused soccer fans to bat an eye at his overall resume. Resch is one of the most prolific goal scorers in state history and has helped rewrite the school record books at Lansing Christian. He ranks inside the top 25 in state books as well in terms of scoring goals. Resch, who plays attacking midfielder or forward, finished his senior season with a co-state-leading 57 goals, also a single-season school record despite missing nearly four games with an illness and being well-under 100 percent in the state tournament. That follows a junior year where he led Michigan with 53 goals and 26 assists. He also added 19 assists and recorded five hattricks this season and finished with 133 points for the 2024 campaign as well where his team finished 22-3-0 and outscored the opposition 122-25. Resch also added numerous game-winning goals and game-winning assists not just this season but during his career. He finished his four-year career with 145 goals and 64 assists and more than a dozen hattricks. Resch’s team finished 78-18-0 overall, went 38-1-0 in league play (.975 league win percentage in the Greater Lansing Activities League as a freshman and sophomore and the Central Michigan Activities Conference as a junior and senior) and won four district championships. His Pilgrims also won three league titles, finished as the league runner-up his freshman year, lost in the regional finals twice and the regional semifinals once, and also advanced to the Division 4 state semifinals this season. Resch’s Pilgrims also had a .813-win percentage from 2021-24, posted 41 shutouts, were only shut out six times, and outscored the opposition 456-99 in a four-year span. Resch is a four-time all-conference, all-district, all-region and All-State player, earning All-State First Team three times to go along with All-State Dream Team and Offensive Player of the Year accolades this season. The Michigan Jaguars Elite-64 club prospect turned down offers to go play in the MLS Next Academy system. He recently committed to NCAA Division II Messiah University, a Christian college with a rich soccer history, after having conversations with coaches from NCAA Division I schools Belmont University, Lipscomb University and Liberty University and NCAA Division III Calvin University. He entered the season as a Mr. Soccer candidate despite being from a D-4 school. The 5-foot-10, 155-pound versatile player also suited up this past summer for the Lansing Common FC of the Midwest Premier League, an amateur team made up of mostly current- and post-college soccer players. He has a 3.8 GPA in the classroom.
“Owen had an incredible career for us. The only thing we didn’t do was win a state championship,” said Lansing Christian coach Tommy Ziolkowski. “I think Owen is a little bit misunderstood sometimes out on the field, but he is so passionate about the sport. He has an incredible soccer IQ and he does things a lot of kids can’t do. Overall, he’s a great kid and student and he really put us on the map the last four years. We’ll miss having him next year.”
HENRY JUNEAU, Harbor Springs soph. F: A rising talent and one of the more accomplished sophomores in all of Michigan, Juneau has already lit of scoreboards near and far for two straight seasons and could be an All-State Dream Team candidate and NCAA Division I or Division II prospect in the future if he continues to develop. Last year as a freshman, he earned All-Lake Michigan Conference honors and this year he was named All-Northern Shores Conference in the first year of that newly-created league. He is also a two-time All-District, All-Region, All-Petoskey Area and Division 4 All-State First Team choice. He had 38 goals and 22 assists as a freshman and helped Harbor Springs to another district championship this season behind a single-season school record 45 goals and 19 assists for 109 points to go along with 10 game-winning goals and nine hattricks. The 5-foot-11, 155-pound fast and physical forward overpowers players with the ball and is always on the move without the ball, making him hard to mark. His team outscored the opposition 85-33 in 20 games this season, posted seven clean sheets, averaged 4.40 goals-per-game and post a team goals-against-average of 1.65 despite playing several ranked teams and larger schools as well. He once scored a single-game school record nine goals in just 25 minutes of a contest this season. Juneau’s team is 27-13-4 the past two seasons where he has led his team to back-to-back district titles and to the regional finals as a freshman. He plays club soccer with Midwest United FC in the National Academy League and has even spent some time in the MLS Next Academy system.
“Henry is as dangerous of a forward that I’ve seen this season,” noted Harbor Springs coach Jeff Suffolk. He’s so slippery with the ball that he gets behind defense and other teams always try to mark him or put together defensive (schemes) to stop him. We played some really good teams in the non-league this season, schools that won state championships, finished as the state runner-up or made long runs in the postseason. He was up there with some of the best players in the state and he’s only a sophomore with two years to go.”
MICHAEL CHANCE JR., Grandville Calvin Christian jr. F: One of the more improved players in Division 4, Chance was thrusted into a more prominent role this season and thrived in leading the Squires to a league-runner-up showing in the Ottawa Kent Conference-Silver Division, a district and regional championship and into the Final Four for the second time. The 5-11, 150-pound target up top was top three on the team in goals, assists, points, and game-winning goals, and helped Calvin Christian post a 15-5-3 overall record with several games contested against much larger schools. Offensively, he helped the Squires average 3.40 goals-per-game. Chance has club experience playing with both Midwest United and the Michigan Rangers.
Midfielders:
ZACHARY FELIX, Clarkston Everest Collegiate sr. M: A four-year varsity veteran and starter, Felix departs as a two-time All-State First Team choice. Felix was one of the Mountaineers’ leaders in goals, assists, points, and game-winning goals the last two seasons and also helped Everest Collegiate win four straight district championships during his tenure for a program that has won five straight districts overall. One of the captains for coach Tom Strach, Felix is a two-time All-Catholic in the CHSL, All-District and All-Region honoree. He led the Mountaineers to a 15-3-2 overall record this year, 8-1-1 in the CHSL-Intersection 2 Division (second place), 12 shutouts, a commanding 109-20 scoring edge in 20 games, 5.45 goals-per-game as a team and a team goals-against-average of 1.00. He is hoping to play small college soccer in the future.
COLE DEJONGE, Muskegon Western Michigan Christian sr. M: The engine in the center of the park for the uber-talented Warriors, DeJonge was the engine that made this team go the last few years. The four-year varsity veteran finished with five goals and 26 assists this year for 36 points. The two-time All-State First Team selection and three-time All-State player drew assists in both the state semifinals and state finals this year, including wins over Grandville Calvin Christian (1-0) in the semifinals and Plymouth Christian (1-0) in the state finals. He also led the charge to the six postseason wins where the Warriors held a 17-0 scoring edge and the six clean sheets. Behind the field general DeJonge, Western Michigan Christian thrived to a 15-7-3 overall record, a 69-27 scoring edge (18 of those goals allowed came in the first 10 games), 13 shutouts, a 1.08 team goals-against-average, and 2.76 goals-per-game average as a team over 25 games. He plays club soccer for Lakeshore SC-Premier.
REUBEN BOS, Grandville Calvin Christian sr. M: After Calvin Christian lost in the regional semifinals last year to Muskegon Western Michigan Christian, Bos helped the Squires advance two further rounds this season and into the Final Four for the second time in program history. After earning All-Ottawa Kent Conference-Silver Division and All-District honors in 2023, Bos upped his individual game and leadership skills and ended up earning All-League, All-District, All-Region and All-State First Team this season a senior. He finished in the top three on the team in goals, assists and points.
ANDREW SPIEGEL, Hillsdale Academy sr. M: The Colts have won five straight Division 4 district titles and with Spiegel in the lineup the last four seasons, independent Hillsdale Academy has posted a 52-24-8 overall record. The Colts did not advance out of the regional play the last five years. Spiegel was one of Hillsdale Academy’s leaders in goals, assists, points, multi-goal games and game-winning goals and also earned All-District, All-Region and All-Hillsdale Daily News Area honors this season. He was All-District and All-Area last season.
DREW BARNEY, Jackson Christian soph. M: One of the more accomplished and dynamic players in the state in the loaded Class of 2027, Barney has already turned in some gaudy numbers and has helped place Jackson Christian back on the state’s soccer map for the first time in years. This season as a sophomore, Barney led the Royals to a 16-4-1 record, a 5-1-1 record in the Independent Soccer League to win a second straight title, and to its first district championship in several seasons. Barney helped Jackson Christian outscore the opposition 91-23 with eight shutouts, post 4.34 goals-per-game as a team and record a 1.10 goals-against-average of 1.10 over 21 games. He finished the campaign with 23 goals, 23 assists, 69 points, two hattricks and five game-winning goals. He was listed as All-ISL First Team, All-District, All-Region, All-Jackson Area and All-state First Team. Last year as a freshman, he recorded a single-season school record 29 assists to go along with 16 goals, 62 points, one hattrick and two game-winning goals. He earned All-ISL First Team, All-District, All-Region, All-Area and All-State First Team as a freshman where he led the Royals to a respectable 12-4-3 record, an 87-26 scoring edge and seven clean sheets defensively. He plays club ball for Nationals SC-Capital Area ECNL and still has 2.5 more school years to shine at the club and high school levels before playing in college. Barney also plays futsal and was selected to and traveled previously to Lisbon, Portugal, to play against Benfica and Sporting Lisbon Futsal Academy with a group of other selected American kids earlier this year. He is traveling to Valencia in February to train at Valencia CF Academy for a few weeks to enhance his game.
“Drew's passion and love for the game of soccer is obvious. He works incredibly hard year-round and has been blessed by many people to be given chances at many places to continue growing as a player and person,” said Jackson Christian coach Nick Barney.
JAMES WHITING, Kalamazoo Hackett Catholic Prep sr. M: While the Irish ventured through a slight rebuilding campaign in 2024, this four-year varsity performer still helped Hackett Catholic Prep win another Division 4 district title this season. The playmaker in the attack is a great facilitator. He is also a four-time All-State player, listed as honorable mention as a freshman, third team as a sophomore and first team as a junior and senior. He is also a four-time All-Southwestern Athletic Conference-Valley Division, All-District, All-Region and All-Kalamazoo Area honoree. He helped his team win three district crowns and one regional crown during his prep career. This year Whiting only played in 13 games due to injury in the middle of the season, but recovered to record nine goals, 18 assists and 36 points and lead his team to a third-place finish in the SAC-Valley Division, a third-straight district trophy and to a berth in the regional finals before bowing out to Grandville Calvin Christian. He finished his prep career with 36 goals, 77 assists and 149 total points over 75 games played and his school finished a combined 51-27-8 in the four seasons that Whiting was on the roster. On the club soccer circuit, Whiting is now part of TKO-Premier’s Elite-64 team and gets to travel around the Midwest to showcase his talents. He is undecided on where he will attend college or if he will play collegiately or not.
BRIAN MOSQUEDA, Leland jr. M: The Comets have been a model of consistency in Division 4 during the last decade and Mosqueda is one of the many fine talents that have come through this small public school in recent years with one more year still to play. The engine in the middle of the field for Leland, which again was ranked in the top five the whole 2024 season, Mosqueda finished with eight goals, 11 assists and 27 points as a holding central midfielder. He helped his team go 18-3-1 overall with a 12-game win streak in the middle of the season, outscore the opposition 113-9 overall with 16 shutouts and win a third straight Northwest Conference championship. In the last three seasons, the Comets have posted a combined record of 55-12-3 record, recorded at least 18 wins each of those three seasons and won at least a district championship each year to go along with the three straight league titles. In comparison, Leland finished just 9-14-1 the year before Mosqueda entered high school. The junior captain and Team Offensive MVP is a physically dominant player and ball-winner with a nice touch on the ball and sees the field incredibly well. He was listed on MSN’s Next 150 Field Players back at the start of the season and could wind up being a small college prospect before his prep career comes to a close. He plays club ball with the TBAYS North Storm.
“Brian is probably our most skilled, well-rounded player on our roster,” noted Leland coach Rob Sirrine back in late September. “He gets a lot of those hockey-style assists, where he doesn’t necessarily make the pass that sets up the goal but makes the initial pass to get our (attack) going. He is a very talented player and even next year we’ll bring back a lot of guys and we’ll still be very talented offensively with him in our lineup.”
CAEDMON WHIPPLE, Plymouth Christian Academy sr. M/F: One of top players to ever don the Plymouth Christian jersey, Whipple led the Eagles to a historic season in 2024 which resulted in a Division 4 state finals appearance and a state runner-up trophy. The four-year starter rotated between forward and attacking center midfielder during his career and was amongst the team leaders in goals, assists and points each year. This season, Whipple led the Eagles to a 16-6-3 record, a third-place finish in the deep Michigan Independent Athletic Conference-Blue Division, a third district title in four seasons and second regional title. Whipple finished with 23 goals, 12 assists, 58 points and scored the game-winning goal in a state semifinals upset over top-five-ranked Lansing Christian in a game that ventured into double overtime (2-1). He was also responsible in helping contain Lansing Christian’s Owen Resch and keep him in check, as the whole defensive scheme was to nullify Resch’s ability to work in space and create chances and make another player beat the Eagles. Whipple and Plymouth Christian’s defensive effort slowed Muskegon Western Michigan Christian in the state finals until a late goal in the 79th minute gave the Warriors the 1-0 victory in the Division 4 title match. Whipple is a four-time All-MIAC Blue Division and All-District player, a three-time All-Region performer, and was listed as All-State Third Team as both a sophomore and junior before earning the nod for All-State First Team this season. Whipple’s Eagles did spend some weeks in the top 15 rankings or listed as honorable mention in the polls before putting together their lengthiest stay in the state tournament in program history with the run to the state finals for the first time in program history.
ADAM IMAI, Royal Oak Shrine Catholic jr. M: Although he missed four games late in the regular season due to an illness, including the CHSL-Cardinal Tournament finals match loss to Detroit Cristo Rey (2-0), Imai had another brilliant season in 2024 as one of the team’s leaders in the attack. He finished with 15 goals and 13 assists for 45 points but was far more valuable out on the field with his ability to control the tempo and turn stout defense into the attack in a hurry. Imai helped Shrine finish 14-2-3 overall, including 8-0-2 in the CHSL-Intersectional-2 Division where the Knights captured the division title. He helped his side outscore the opposition 67-11 this season, post 12 shutouts, average 3.52 goals-per-game as a team and post a team goals-against-average of 0.58, one of the best in all of Division 4. Imai also helped Shrine win a district title and a gain a berth in the Division 4 regional finals before the Knights were upset by Plymouth Christian in overtime. Imai is a two-time All-Catholic player, a three-time All-District performer and also made the All-Region team and All-State First Team this season for the first time. He is expected to be one of the better players again in Division 4 next season. His older brother Andrew Imai was an All-State First Team selection in 2023. The younger Imai has past experience with the Detroit City FC-South Oakland club team and now competes with United FC in the Elite Academy league during the club season.
“Adam is a very athletic attacking center midfielder who sees the field very well and can both score or set up teammates with scoring chances,” said Shrine coach Mark Soma. “He is very creative with the ball, a very good passer and very valuable to us both offensively and defensively. He gets back and helped us defend as well. When he missed four games with pneumonia, you could really see the difference with him not out there. We were missing a huge part of our team with Adam and a couple of other players out of the lineup.”
Defenders/Center Backs:
GRANT MORREN, Grandville Calvin Christian sr. D: Another senior that really improved his game this season, Morren was a huge impact on the Squires’ backline this season after helping the team to a 78-20 scoring edge, 11 shutouts, 3.40 goals-per-game offensively and a 0.87 team goals-against-average. Five of those 20 goals conceded came in one early-season contest and the other 15 goals allowed were scattered throughout the rest of the season. The 6-foot-1 Morren helped lead the defensive unit and aid a 4-1 postseason record, and district and regional titles. Calvin Christian’s defense only conceded two goals in the five state tournament games enroute to the Final Four while the Squires only allowed seven goals in the final 10 games of the season. Morren also plays basketball and baseball at the school and plays club soccer with the Michigan Rangers.
TREY ROMAN, Leland sr. D: Coming from the rural small town in the Leelanau Peninsula northwest of Traverse City, Leland is a small-school powerhouse in soccer with a fine history, especially in the last decade, and Roman is a key part of that success. The four-year varsity veteran and starter, Roman’s team finished 18-3-1 this season, won a third straight Northwest Conference and Division 4 district title and reached the regional finals. Contributing one goal and four assists offensively, Roman’s back line only surrendered a school record nine goals in 22 games, posted a 0.41 team goals-against-average and recorded 16 shutouts this season, all which were school records. During his stellar career, Roman helped the Comets finish a combined 64-26-4, including 32-6-0 in league play, outscore the opposition 371-127, and post 44 shutouts while being shut out just 13 times. His freshman year saw a young Leland team being outscored 77-57 while this year as a senior helped his team outscore the opposition 113-9 and setting all of those aforementioned school records on the defensive end. His teams won three straight league championships after finishing third as a freshman, win three district titles and reach the district finals all four years, advance to the Final Four as both a sophomore and junior and to the Elite Eight this season. The last three years the Comets were knocked out by Muskegon Western Michigan Christian, the eventual state champs, deep into the postseason while his freshman year Leland was ousted by league rival Buckley, who reached the Final Four that 2021 season. Roman was a four-time All-District and three-time All-Northwest Conference title, as well as being an All-State defender three times. He earned Division 4 All-State First Team twice to go along with being tabbed as Division 4 Defensive Player of the Year this season.
“He was a four-year starter for us, and you look at where we were partway through his freshman year to where we were this season is incredible and that’s a testament to Trey and the other players,” said Leland coach Rob Sirrine. “He is the anchor of our back line and what our team did defensively the past couple of years is remarkable. We only gave up nine goals this season and look at all of the shutouts (44) we had during his career. I’m not sure how many, but I know we had a ton. We played some really good teams in the non-league this season. We beat Grandville Calvin Christian 5-0, kept them from scoring and they reached the state semifinals. We played Kingsford, Western Michigan Christian, (Grosse Pointe Woods University) Liggett. We’ll miss having him back there next season, no doubt. He’s a class act and a really great kid who just loves playing soccer.”
LUKE MAAT, Muskegon Western Michigan Christian sr. D: While the Warriors graduated seven starters off their 2023 state championship team and this year’s team featured numerous sophomores and freshmen on the roster, Maat was the glue to Western Michigan Christian’s back line which grew up fast during the 2024 campaign. Although he contributed four goals, one assist and nine points offensively, he anchored a quality backline that didn’t concede a goal in six postseason games and pitched 13 shutouts this season as part of the Warriors’ 15-7-3 campaign which ended in the 11th state title in program history and 10th in the MHSAA state tournament. Maat helped WMC post a team goals-against-average of 1.08 this season and helped navigate a challenging regular season slate that featured numerous MHSAA Division 1, Division 2 and Division 3 schools and he rarely came off the field this season. A four-year varsity player, Maat is undecided on where he will attend college or if he will try to continue his soccer career collegiately, but not before he glued together a young defense and earned All-District, All-Region, All-Muskegon Area and All-State First Team accolades this season.
Goalkeepers:
DANIEL MINASIAN, Muskegon Western Michigan Christian sr. G: A four-year varsity veteran and three-year starter, Minasian finished as a two-time All-District, All-Muskegon Area, All-Region and Division 4 All-State First Team selection to cap a stellar career. He was on the roster for three state championship runs and did not come off the field very often the last two seasons. Over 25 games this season, Minasian logged 1,902 minutes, allowed 24 goals, posted a 1.04 goals-against-average, 11 shutouts, made 131 saves in 155 shots faced, and also posted an impressive .846 save percentage for the 15-7-3 Warriors. Even more impressive is the fact that Western Michigan Christian played several Division 1, Division 2 and Division 3 schools, played one of the nation’s top home-school teams and competed against several state-ranked teams. In the Division 4 state tournament run to the 6-0 record and third straight state title, Minasian and his defense recorded six clean sheets and a 17-0 scoring edge. Minasian is undecided if he wants to play small college soccer.
RAVELL SMITH, Leland jr. G: You talk about a player raising his game to another level. This junior did so between the framework more than most players in the state from his sophomore year to his junior season. With a stout back line in front of him, Smith still worked hard in the offseason to help him become more agile and learn how to take command of his box. After splitting time in the past, Smith logged over 75 percent of his team’s minutes in goal, helped post a 18-3-1 record, post 11 of his team’s 16 shutouts, win a third straight Northwest Conference and district championship and post a 0.38 goals-against-average after allowing just seven goals. His team only conceded nine goals all season and had a team goals-against-average of 0.41, although Smith stepped aside to let the backup goalkeeper gain some minutes in blowouts or against lesser-talented teams. Smith’s Comets ventured to the Division 4 regional finals this season after winning league, district and regional championships the past two seasons.
“Ravell is a much-improved goalkeeper who has put in the work to get better and it has shown this year,” noted Leland coach Rob Sirrine back in September. “We (were) a tough team to score upon this season.”
