SOUTH LYON, Mich. – South Lyon rudely introduced South Lyon East to the state tournament exit doors Thursday night.

The Lions enacted some painful punishment on the Cougars to the tune of a 7-1 whitewashing in a Division 1 pre-district matchup at South Lyon high School.

The win also avenged a 2-1 defeat to South Lyon East back on Sept. 3 in Lakes Valley Conference play.

The Lions’ award? South Lyon will pay a visit to No. 2-ranked Northville at 5 p.m. Monday for a district semifinals clash. Northville is the three-time defending Kensington Lakes Activities Association-West Division and Conference Tournament champions and have been ranked in the top two in Division 1 all season. The Mustangs reached the Division 1 state semifinals in 2021 and 2023.

South Lyon did its part to be earn the right to face one of the state’s top teams, as junior forward Evan Shamberger scored two goals and added two assists for the Lions in the revenge win over rival South Lyon East. Konnor Harvey added two goals, Aiden Lee had a goal and an assist, and Jaden Sumpter and Zac Stephenson also scored for the winners.

The seven-goal outburst was the highest goal total of the season for the Lions and the highest since Sept. 21, 2022, when South Lyon blanked Waterford Mott 7-0 in an LVC game just over two years ago.

South Lyon tied Milford for the regular season LVC title with 18 points (6-2-0) before finishing in the runner-up slot in last week’s conference tournament to Milford. The Lions only outscored the opposition 27-17 during the regular season, but 14 of those goals conceded came in the first eight games of the regular season.

South Lyon now heads into its clash with Northville with a 34-18 scoring edge and a 9-5-0 overall record. The Lions have never won a district championship in boys soccer.
