ITHACA, Mich. – Sometimes it’s not how you start, but how you finish.
Because of that theory, Ithaca is a much more competitive soccer side in mid-October than in mid-August.
After opening the season at 1-3-0 and being outscored 14-8 in that stretch, the unranked Yellowjackets are playing a more quality soccer game as of late and it has shown up in the results during the past month.
Ithaca upended visiting Dansville Thursday in a Division 3 pre-district contest, 2-0, to move the Yellowjackets into next week’s district semifinals.
Ithaca is peaking at the right time, now on a seven-game unbeaten streak with a 6-0-1 record in that span and that includes a 14-2 scoring edge and a pair of shutouts in the seven-game unbeaten streak. The Yellowjackets have only allowed two goals in a game in that run and that was a 6-2 victory over Durand back on Sept. 19 to kickstart the surge.
Ithaca was coming off a three-game losing streak before that victory over Durand, including a 6-1 setback to Division 3 state-ranked and eventual Northern Shores Conference champion Grayling on Sept. 19. The Yellowjackets have not lost since that game with the highly-touted Vikings.
Against Dansville, Tanner Lamey scored both goals to lead the way. Brady Paradise and Luis Gustavo drew assists and Griffin Macey made 10 saves for the team’s fourth shutout of the campaign. Overall, Ithaca has now scored 36 goals and conceded 36 goals, but more than half of those goals allowed came during the first half of the season.
Ithaca advances to the district semifinals Oct. 15 at 5 p.m. against fourth-ranked Lansing Christian at Dansville.
