BOYS SOCCER: Midland Dow eliminates rival Midland with 4-0 shutout; Portage Central blanks Lakeview; Loy-Norrix, Mason prevail in pre-districts

MIDLAND, Mich. – Things have been a little bit unpredictable this season for Midland Dow, as the Chargers have hovered near the five-hundred mark during a rebuilding campaign under first-year coach Cody Schoener.


Thursday was one of those high notes.


Senior forward Justin Slade scored twice in the first half and added another tally in the second half to net the hattrick and Midland Dow cruised to a 4-0 shutout of visiting rival in a Division 1 pre-district match at Midland Dow.


Slade now has 18 goals on the campaign for the Chargers. Brandon Okoro scored the third goal for Dow, which led 3-0 at the half.


Eli Soderberg and Jordan Groulx added two assists apiece for Midland Dow, which moved to 9-9-3 overall. The Chargers have now outscored the opposition 66-35 this season with seven shutouts. Evan Pfeiffer and Luke Bills shared the shutout in goal for the Chargers.


Dow is 3-3-0 overall in its last five games but has outscored the opposition 27-10 during that stretch with two straight shutouts.


Midland finishes the year 9-8-1 with only a 42-38 scoring edge.


Midland Dow finished in fifth place in the Saginaw Valley League and Midland landed sixth out of 12 programs this season.


PORTAGE CENTRAL 4, BATTLE CREEK LAKEVIEW 0: Division 1 top-ranked and Southwestern Michigan Athletic Conference overall champion continued its winning ways in the state tournament with this shutout of the visiting Spartans Thursday. Four players scored goals for the Mustangs, who improved to 16-0-3 on the season. Portage Central now owns a 77-7 scoring edge this season. It marked the 12th shutout of the season and third in the last four games for the Mustangs, who visit district host Grand Ledge at 5 p.m. on Oct. 15 in the district semifinals.


KALAMAZOO LOY-NORRIX 2, PORTAGE NORTHERN 1: Loy-Norrix went on the road and came home with this pre-district victory over the Huskies. The Knights, who are enjoying their best season in over a decade, picked up a pair of goals from Sam Schnell to lead the way. Loy-Norrix is 6-1-3 over its last 10 games with its only loss in the Southwestern Michigan Athletic Conference Tournament finals against top-ranked Portage Central (3-1) last week. The other loss was back on Aug. 28 and came in a 2-1 setback to Mattawan. Loy-Norrix has outscored the opposition 72-14 this season with nine shutouts. The Knights will face Mattawan, a 3-1 winner Thursday over Holt, in the district semifinals Oct. 15 at Grand Ledge.


DIVISION 2


MASON 5, LANSING EVERETT 0: The Bulldogs, last year’s Division 2 state runner-up, cruised in its district opener Thursday with this 5-0 clean sheet over Everett. Mason improves to 13-3-3 overall and pitched its 12th shutout on the season over 19 games.

Overall, in its last 10 games, Mason has posted a 8-0-2 overall record. The Bulldogs own a 50-9 scoring edge tis season, 30-2 in the last 10 games. Mason captured both the Capital Area Athletic Conference-Red Division and CAAC-Gold Cup tournament champions.
