(Editor's Note: This is a repost of an earlier article from January 2024 of the MSN All-Upper Peninsula Boys Soccer Team.)
UPPER PENINSULA, Mich. – For the first time since the 2006-07 school year, boys soccer programs across the Upper Peninsula that are members of the MHSAA were allowed to finally participate in one of the state’s four divisions when it comes to the state tournament for soccer.
Both Marquette (Division 2) and Kingsford (Division 3) also won district titles in the Upper Peninsula’s first time in the state tournament since 2006, with the Sentinels winning in Division 2 and earning a district title for the first time since 1999, while Kingsford also made a memorable run to a district championship – believed to be the first one in school history – on the soccer pitch behind a dominating effort.
It’s of no surprise that Marquette and Kingsford dominate the second annual 2023 All-Michigan Upper Peninsula Boys Soccer Team, as selected by the Michigan Soccer Network staff and in conjunction with coaches’ nominations and input.
Below is a brief profile on each first-team members selected to the squad. Kingsford’s Jaxon Buckley was named the U.P. Player of the Year, while Kingsford’s Jeff Gordon earned the nod for the Coach of the Year.
FIRST TEAM:
FORWARDS:
VINCENT DAVIS, Mackinac Island jr. F: A junior in his third season as a starter, Davis earned Northern Lights League co-MVP honors after leading the Islanders in goals and points. Davis also competes in basketball and is a U.P. state qualifier in track and field.
CONNOR POLKKEY, Houghton sr. F: One of eight seniors on the roster, Polkkey was one of the top two leaders in goals, assists and points for the Gremlins, who did not enter the MHSAA Division 3 tournament this past season but captured the U.P. Division II Tournament title. He is a first-time All-Upper Peninsula First Team selection.
DYLAN SWIFT, Munising Baptist soph. F: The talented striker collected a team-high 21 goals on the year for a team that scored 33 total goals, netted three hattricks and contributed three assists to earn All-Northern Lights League honors. He earned All-NLL Honorable Mention nd All-Upper Peninsula Honorable Mention accolades as a freshman the previous season after again being amongst the team leaders in goals, assists and points. Swift is also a varsity starter in basketball and carries a 3.9 GPA.
NICK DESJARDEN, Cooks Big Bay De Noc jr. F: After earning All-Northern Lights League Honorable Mention and All Upper Peninsula Honorable Mention honors as a sophomore, Desjarden had a breakthrough junior campaign on the pitch. He led the Black Bears to a 12-3-0 overall record, a 10-1-0 record against Northern Lights League competition and to the NLL Tournament championship. Desjarden led Big Bay De Noc with 20 goals, seven assists, three hattricks, and three game-winning goals for a team that averaged 4.3 goals a game while conceding one goal a contest. He has 50 goals in his career and also helped the Black Bears win a game via shootout this season. He is a three-time All-Northern Lights League First Team selection, a starter since the eighth grade under the MHSAA sub-100 student rule, and also excels in basketball and golf. He carries a 3.08 GPA.
MIDFIELDERS:
JAXON BUCKLEY, Kingsford jr. M/F (U.P. Player of the Year): Perhaps the most dangerous player on the pitch for any Upper Peninsula team this season, Buckley put together a brilliant junior campaign to not only earn Team MVP honors, but also being named U.P. Player of the Year for the first time. The two-time All-U.P. First Team selection also earned All-District honors for the district champion Flivvers and was named Division 3 All-State Third Team in his school’s first appearance in the MHSAA state tournament since 2006. He finished the 2023 campaign with 24 goals and 13 assists. Buckley, also an accomplished club soccer player competing for various Wisconsin-based club teams, is also a Midwest Regional member on the Olympic Developmental Program circuit and is a part of the Wisconsin ODP state pool as well.
ETHAN HECKELL, Houghton soph. M/F: Combining forces with the aforementioned Connor Polkkey on the attack, Heckel was one of the team leaders in goals, assists and total points and helped the Gremlins capture the Upper Peninsula Division II Tournament title for the first time in several years. Heckell should be the focal point of the Houghton offense in 2024 after his team graduates eight players.
MICAH BRASSO, Escanaba-Gladstone Bayside Unified sr. M: The standout midfielder earned All-Upper Peninsula First Team honors for the second straight season after being one of his team’s leaders throughout his four-year career. Brasso is a four-year starter for Bayside.
KALEB CHIPELEWSKI, Marquette jr. M: One of just four returning starters this year for Marquette, Chipelewski saw his role change to be more of a goal-scorer and facilitator this season after the departure of 2022 Upper Peninsula Player of the Year Max Dawson who graduated in June of 2023. Chipelewski earned All-District accolades for 14-win Marquette, which won its first district title since 1999, this time coming in the MHSAA Division 2 state tournament. His Sentinels also finished as the Up. Division I runner-up.
JETT BUCKLEY, Kingsford fr. M: One of the top younger players on the Upper Peninsula circuit, this freshman prospect made an impact on already a loaded offensive team and was top five in goals, assists and points for the Flivvers. Kingsford torched the nets for a single-season team record 93 goals. He earned All-District Honorable Mention status this season.
GAVYN LANDON, Kingsford jr. M: With the Buckley brothers and teammate Gavin Moore, the Flivvers scored their fair share of goals this season, which led to a 21-2-0 overall record, a U.P. Division I Tournament title for the first time, and a berth in the MHSAA Division 3 regional semifinals for the first time in program history. The third-year starter earned All-District honors. He was an All-U.P. Honorable Mention choice in 2022.
GAVIN MOORE, Kingsford jr. M: The other part of Kingsford’s potent attacking unit of forwards and midfielders, Moore was more of a holding midfielder this season yet a key contributor for a team that outscored the 93-18 over 23 games. He was top five in points for the Flivvers, who shattered the school record for team goals in a campaign and were a part of the MHSAA Division 3 Sweet 16 for the first time and also state-ranked in the MIHSSCA Division 3 rankings for the first time as well late in the regular season.
JOEL GILLESPIE, Cooks Big Bay De Noc sr. M: A repeat member to the All-U.P. First Team, Gillespie is a three-time All-Northern Lights League performer as well. He was the Conference MVP as a junior. Gillespie is also one of the Black Bears’ top performers in track and field as a high jumper and sprinter.
CENTER BACKS/OUTSIDE BACKS:
JOEL O’CONNOR, Chassell Copper Country Christian sr. D: O’Connor is a two-time All-U.P. First Team selection after leading the Warriors to another successful campaign. He anchored the back line and is starter dating back to the seventh grade for Copper Country Christian, a small non-MHSAA member up near the Keweenaw Peninsula.
NOAH INGRBRIGTSEN, Escanaba-Gladstone Bayside Unified jr. D: Although Bayside dipped into a rebuilding campaign, Ingrbrigtsen still shined on the pitch for his varsity club team, a long-standing team that is club-funded and not yet eligible for the MHSAA state tournament. Ingrbrigtsen is a two-time All-Upper Peninsula First Team honoree.
INDIGO CATALANO, Marquette jr. D: After earning All-U.P. Honorable Mention status in 2022, Catalano jumped up to the first team this season. The 6-foot-2, 165-pound defensive stalwart was one of four returning starters for Marquette and is a calming presence on the Sentinels’ back line. Catalano earned All-District honors as well for 14-6-0 Marquette, which finished 2-1 in the MHSAA Division 2 postseason before falling to state-ranked Fruitport in the Division 2 regional semifinals. Catalano helped Marquette win its first district in 24 years and being listed as honorable mention in the 2023 D-2 MIHSSCA state rankings.
BEN FORNETTI, Kingsford jr. D: Another talented player to don the Kingsford jersey, Fornetti was used more as a defensive player for a team that won 21 games and enjoyed the best season in school history. Fornetti helped aid 11 shutouts, a team record, and allowed just 18 goals in 23 games. He earned All-District accolades.
JACOB CROCKFORD, Kingsford jr. D: While Kingsford fielded a vaunted offensive attack that scored 93 goals, the Flivvers were also a stout defensive team as well and Crockford was a part of 11 shutouts for Kingsford. His defensive unit only allowed 18 goals all season and he helped Kingsford allow less than one goal a game and concede more than two goals in a game only twice all season.
GOALKEEPERS:
EDAN HAUTAMAKI, Marquette jr. G: Another converted goalkeeper when he entered high school, Hautamaki has improved leaps and bounds over three seasons and was a driving force behind the Sentinels’ success in recent years. He captured 14 wins in goal and helped Marquette win a Division 2 district title in its first season in the MHSAA state tournament in 16 years. The All-District goalkeeper was brilliant in his team defeating state power Petoskey in the district title game. He is a two-time All-U.P. First Team selection.
LANDON ADAM, Kingsford soph. G: A converted goalkeeper right before he entered high school, this two-year starter is like a sponge at his position and keeps getting better and better each time out on the pitch. Adam helped lead the Flivvers to the U.P. Division I Tournament title with a shootout victory, and was stellar in a district semifinals win over state powerhouse Elk Rapids in another game that reached a shootout. Adam earned All-District honors in MHSAA Division 3 and is also a two-time All-U.P. First Team selection. He finished with 11 shutouts and a 0.79 goals-against-average and posted a save percentage over .800.
AT-LARGE:
TYLER WINCH, Iron Mountain-Norway Unified sr. G (At-Large): While Iron Mountain-Norway has had its ups and downs in recent years, Winch has developed into a fine goalkeeper after keeping the Mountaineers in countless games the past few years. The Team MVP honoree also earned All-District Honorable Mention. Winch is also a standout wrestler at Iron Mountain and could surpass 100 wins this upcoming 2023-24 season.
ETHAN SWIFT, Munising Baptist fr. G (At-Large): Only a freshman, Swift helped the Bobcats become one of the top teams in the Northern Lights League. He played 13.75 games in goal including each of three NLL conference tournament games, allowed 19 goals and posted three shutouts. He also recorded 150 saves, posted a .888 save percentage, had a 1.47 goals-against-average and was 7-4-0 overall standing between the pipes. He was co-Northern Lights League Player of the Year winner despite being an underclassman. Swift also plays varsity basketball.
COACH OF THE YEAR
JEFF GORDON, Kingsford: Since taking over the Flivvers program five years ago, Gordon has molded this group into being one of the state’s fastest rising teams. The Flivvers captured their first Upper Peninsula Division I Tournament title this season and beat Marquette three times this past fall, the first time either of those had occurred. Previously, Marquette had captured 15 straight U.P. Division I titles with Kingsford finishing second several times. His team went on an offensive tear this season and rewrote the school record books, scoring 93 goals, netting 4.05 goals a contest while allowing around 0.79 goals an outing, and recording 11 clean sheets. The Flivvers posted a 21-2-0 overall record and added to that total was the school’s first MHSAA Division 3 district championship. In the 1990s through the 2006 campaign, Kingsford was never able to advance out of a district. Kingsford defeated Iron Mountain-Norway (6-0), state powerhouse Elk Rapids (3-2, shootout), and Grayling (5-1, district finals) in the district rounds before falling to Fremont (3-2) in a Division 3 regional semifinals match to end their brilliant campaign.

Michigan-based Premier Media Group is expanding ... don't miss out on coverage
SHELBY TWP., Mich. – The Premier Media Group is expanding its broadcast net.
And we want you.
The Michigan-based PMG, founded in 2022, its flagship production the Michigan Soccer Network and all other affiliates, is actively scheduling games in a wide variety of high school leagues and conferences, small colleges, amateur, pre-professional, youth club, and other avenues of the beautiful game in Michigan.
The schedule for the fall semester is starting to fill up across Michigan.
The daily connections are being made and the spreading of our brand has brought in great reviews.
Would the coaches, administration, student-athletes, players and fans like for us to broadcast a game near you?
Regardless of the now-popular remote broadcast games, on-location broadcast games, on-location shows or in-studio daily shows, there is a simple process. Visit the website www.michigansoccernetwork.com or click below for details.
PMG will also be holding various “Win A Free Broadcast” contest at various parts of the fall, winter (indoor) and spring seasons.
"(Michigan Soccer Network) has does a great job making these kids feel special,” offered Michal Hatfield, girls soccer coach at Trenton High School who also coaches in the Detroit City FC youth club system. “The broadcasts were professionally done and we were very pleased when they did our games. They did a great job with (play-by-play), graphics and postgame interviews with the kids. And a lot of people saw it. We had uncles and aunts that have never seen their nieces play get a chance to watch them on YouTube). And all of the kids were able to jump on there (the YouTube channel) afterwards and watch the game.”
The MSN staff had the pleasure of broadcasting multiple games the last two school years for schools in the Oakland Activities Association and have received its fair share of feedback. The goal is to conduct broadcasts of games throughout the state of Michigan, especially in the larger populated regions.
“MSN has done a great job with broadcasts in our league (Macomb Area Conference),” said Trevor Foster, current head coach of the Romeo girls soccer program, goalkeepers coach for Oakland University’s soccer programs, and director at the Michigan Goalkeepers Academy. “I know the girls love it. And I know some of the parents were putting their earphones on and listening to the game when they were (in the stands) and it gives relatives a chance to watch games that they normally wouldn’t be able to.
“It’s as close to professional (broadcast) as any broadcast of high school soccer that you will see out there,” added Foster. “Plus, they do all types of (amateur and pre-professional) leagues out there (in Michigan).”
“We were very pleased, especially with the knowledge of high school soccer in the state of Michigan from the play-by-play announcers and color commentators,” said Todd Heugh, the current director of athletics at Troy Athens High School and a former coach at the school. “They put together a valuable (product) and the games are live on YouTube for everyone to watch, even if you are (a relative or an alumni) not in the area. I know coaches go on there (YouTube), too, to watch games of an upcoming opponent.”
The PMG staff has a goal of 100-plus games this fall from mid-August through November. The Michigan Soccer Network conducted a record 50 remote or in-person broadcasts during the month of June.
PMG also has contacts within Michigan, the Midwest and even in different parts of the U.S. and have become broadcast partners for more than 15 different leagues or franchises within those leagues over the past three years. PMG has multiple broadcasting rights for within the USL-League Two, USL-W League, UPSL, MWPL, NISA, WSPL and more and constantly expanding its web of coverage both on various YouTube channels and on our website at www.michigansoccernetwork.com. It has broadcasted more high school boys soccer and high school girls soccer at more than 75 high schools in Michigan.
“MSN has been a great media partner for the Bucks and AFC,” said Costa Papista, President of the Flint City Bucks and Flint City AFC of the USL-League Two and USL-W League, respectively. “The production and overall quality of our live broadcasts are professional grade. Flint City fans, sponsors and supporters greatly appreciate the MSN quality. We are always receiving excellent feedback and comments from our fans and visiting fans as well.”
And now the busy season starts in earnest with high school, college and youth club team beginning the 2024-25 school year.
