DAVISON, Mich. – A season with a revolving door of injuries resulted in a slow start but a furious finish for Gladwin Skeels Christian.
Following three years with an explosive offense, the Eagles used defense to capture their second Michigan Association of Christian Schools Division II boys soccer state championship in three years, overcoming a rash of injuries that forced the coaching staff to hold certain players out of various games or move players around to compensate.
Skeels Christian put the finishing touches on the state championship – the school’s third all-time in the MACS Division II tournament – with a come-from-behind 3-2 victory over Carson City Fellowship Baptist Nov. 2 at Davison High School.
The Eagles (8-4-1) won six straight games to cap the season and bounced back from a 2-1 halftime deficit against Carson City Fellowship Baptist to prevail in the end with a pair of second-half goals.
The Eagles won the MACS Division II state title in 2022 with a 3-0 victory over Fostoria Baptist, while the program also reached the MACS-II state semifinals in both 2021 and 2023. Previously, they also captured a state crown back in 1994.
“We kind of road this senior class for the last few years, actually,” said Skeels Christian co-coach Kyle Flach, who shares the duties with Kyle LaBrosse. “We have six seniors on this team that have been a big part of our success over the years. We won two titles with them and been to, I believe, the (state) semifinals a couple of more times. We’ll miss having those guys around. We’ll be very young next year. We only had around 25-30 kids in our high school this year and we had 13 on our soccer team. It was a short bench.

Gladwin Skeels Christian senior midfielder Logan LaBrosse and the Eagles claimed the Michigan Association of Christian Schools Division II state title this season, the third in program history.
“But it was a lot different this year,” continued Coach Flach. “The last few years we let our offense kind of carry us. But this year it was our defense. We had a lot of injuries to some of our top players and had to move some guys around. We became more of a defensive team this year. I think we lost some games earlier in the season that we might have been able to win but we had some guys out or playing other positions. I think that’s why we didn’t get a high seed for the tournament. We had a lot of experience with those seniors, but we didn’t necessarily score a lot of goals this year like we did the last three years. Logan LaBrosse, for example, was one of top goal scorers the last three years but he played with a hamstring injury for most of the season and couldn’t sprint like normal. So, we had to play him back in the midfield and use him as more of a (distributor) and we lost some of our scoring that way. But we had some other guys step up and overall, we became a much better defensive team this year.”
Skeels Christian finished with a 41-21 scoring edge this season, posting four shutouts along the way. As the No. 5 seed in the Michigan Association of Christian Schools Division II state tournament, the team knocked off three teams seeded higher than the Eagles to win the title – No. 4 Clarkston Springfield Christian (1-0), defending state champion and top-seeded Fostoria Baptist (2-1) and then No. 2-seeded Carson City Fellowship Baptist (3-2) in the finals to earn the trophy.
Trailing 2-1 at the break, Skeels Christian (8-4-1) came out on fire by scoring a pair of goals all while putting the clamps down on Fellowship Baptist’s high-powered offensive machine, in particular senior Alex Rodriguez – Michigan’s leading goal scorer this season with 60 goals and a state-leading 10 hattricks on the campaign.
Skeels Christian senior Logan LaBrosse, who battled that hamstring injury all season and spent most of the campaign in the midfield after being the team’s leading scorer last season as a forward, finally tied the game at 2-2 in the 55th minute off a pass from 8th grade forward Noah Scott.
It was the foot of Scott who booted home the go-ahead and eventual game-winning goal in the 65th minute when he corralled a pass from senior midfielder Ian Flach and sent the ball into the back of the net.
Fellowship Baptist’s Rodriguez gave the Falcons (10-6-1) a 1-0 lead when he finished off a cross from Jack Eastman in the 10th minute.
After Skeels Christian tied the game off a goal by senior forward Elijah Scott in the 20th minute, Rodriguez netted his 60th goal of the campaign unassisted in the 29th minute to help give Fellowship Baptist its 2-1 halftime advantage.

Carson City Fellowship Baptist senior midfielder/forward Alex Rodriguez scored two goals in the Michigan Association of Christian Schools Division II state title game this season, but it wasn't enough as the Falcons fell short to Gladwin Skeels Christian 3-2 in the finals.
Fellowship Baptist, which outscored the opposition 92-50 this season and averaged 5.42 goals a game offensively, was shut down in the second half, as Skeels Christian defensively bottled up the passing lanes and contained the high-flying Rodriguez and not allowing the talented forward to get into open space to wreak havoc over the final 40 minutes.
“What a great comeback,” said Flach. “We were down 2-1 at the half but we found a way to come back and beat them. And we didn’t let them score again (in the second half). They have one of the best forwards in the state and we didn’t allow him to score again in the second half.”
Skeels Christian senior goalkeeper Harley Hughui made 10 saves in 12 chances to record the win in goal in the finals. Fellowship Baptist sophomore goalkeeper Collin Lund recorded 10 saves for the Falcons while facing 13 shots on goal.
Despite the loss, Carson City Fellowship Baptist coach Dalen McAlvey was not entirely disappointed.
“I asked around and this is believed to be the first time we’ve ever played in the state finals in our history and that goes back to (1981),” said McAlvey, who was assisted by Tom Roher this season. “This was a great game with two good teams. (Hats off) to them for coming back to beat us. They are a good team. Not too many teams have been able to shut us down for (an entire) half all season like (Skeels) did. I’m still proud of this team because after a couple of rough games early in the season we were very competitive this season and we were able to (make it) to the finals. We’ve been to the (MACS) finals in boys basketball and girls basketball many times and I believe we’ve been there in volleyball, too. But not for (boys) soccer.”
