GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – More upsets happen in the first two rounds of the state tournament than any other segment of the postseason.
Grand Rapids Forest Hills Central made sure it would not be an upset victim Thursday night. Especially against a cross-district rival that the red-hot Rangers defeated twice in the regular season in Ottawa Kent Conference-White Division play.
Forest Hills Central cruised to a 4-0 win over Grand Rapids Forest Hills Eastern in a Division 2 pre-district game Thursday at Central to keep the Rangers’ streak alive and keep FHC’s hopes for a district championship intact.
Junior forward Ben Bachert scored twice and Grand Rapids Forest Hills Central made sure there would be no upset. Seniors Andrew Moeller and Eli Lipke added goals and Jack Fielder and Moeller picked up assists in the victory. Senior Brandon Ramsay notched the shutout on four saves, his third straight clean sheet.
Forest Hills Central (13-4-2) has now nine straight games, including three straight shutouts, and are 11-0-1 in its last 12 games. After graduating 14 players off the 2023 roster, the Rangers started the season 2-4-1 and outscored 12-11 during the first seven games of the 2024 campaign, Forest Hills Central has righted the ship.
Following a 2-1 setback to East Grand Rapids back on Sept. 3, the Rangers have not lost since that game. Behind the 12-game unbeaten streak, including a 3-0 shutout of OKC-White Division champion Grand Rapids Forest Hills Northern on Oct. 7.
Over the last 12 games, Forest Hills Central has outscored the opposition 49-7 with eight clean sheets – and four of those goals conceded came in a 5-4 victory over Grand Rapids Catholic Central on Sept. 18.
The Rangers own a 59-19 scoring edge for the entire season with eight shutouts and have only been shut out one time back on Aug. 21 against Rockford (1-0) on the third game of the season. Forest Hills Central now owns a 59-19 scoring differential over its 19 opponents this season.
The Rangers advance to the Division 2 district semifinals Oct. 14 against Forest Hills Northern. The two tied 0-0 on Sept. 11 before FHC held the upper hand on in the Oct. 7 matchup. The third match between the two rivals will take place at 7 p.m. at Grand Rapids Forest Hills Eastern with the winner advancing to the district finals.
Forest Hills Eastern finishes 5-14-1 overall and finished 2-6-0 down the stretch.
