Patriots pick up late goal to upend Bruins 1-0 for third MACS Division I title in the last decade; fifth crown in the 2000s

DAVISON, Mich. – Talk about waiting for the final minutes.
Top-seeded Clinton Township Faith Christian picked up a goal inside the final 10 minutes and the Patriots went on to claim their second straight Michigan Association of Christian Schools boys soccer state title with a 1-0 victory over Troy Bethan Christian Nov. 2 at Davison High School.
Coach Ron Thompson’s Patriots have now won three state titles in the past decade and all three of those game were victories over Troy Bethany Christian. Faith Christian defeated Bethany 2-0 last year and 3-2 back in the 2015 MACS Division I state finals as well.
It marked the fourth straight season where the Patriots advanced to the MACS Division I state title game and the school was 2-2 in those matches.
The program also won MACS Division I state titles back in 2003 and 2004, while the school lost in the 1989 finals as well when the school was still Roseville Calvary Christian and in both 2021 and 2022. In the 2021 finals, the Patriots were upset 1-0 by Rochester Hills Christian and in the 2022 finals Faith Christian came up short again 3-2 to Rochester Hills Christian in a game that featured two overtime periods and a shootout.
Senior midfielder Abe Moore scored the lone goal off a pass from senior forward Nathan Hayley and the defense did its part in stymying the Bruins for the second straight season.
Senior Oliver Thompson notched the shutout in-between the pipes for Faith Christian (10-2-3) for his second straight state title clean sheet for the Patriots. Seniors Drew Harkins and Evan Michon, junior Blake Houtani and sophomore Preston Moore aided the defensive effort – Faith’s third shutout of the campaign.
The Patriots, who slipped past Davison Faith Baptist in the state semifinals (2-1 in double overtime), held a 55-20 scoring edge this season over 15 games, posted the three shutouts and were not blanked one time in all of the 2024 season. This follows a dominating 2023 season where Faith Christian featured 10 seniors that had to be replaced this season, and that group included 56 total goals and 32 assists from that group of talented players that graduated this past June. The Patriots returned 14 varsity players this season but had several first-year starters.
A year ago, Faith Christian finished 17-1-1, won the Wolverine Christian Conference at 5-1-0 and outscored the opposition 100-16 with eight shutouts. The Patriots were never shut out last season and ended the campaign on an eight-game win streak.
This year with a much different makeup and a multitude of new starters, Faith Christian shuffled in several players that saw significantly increased roles this fall and played its best soccer down the stretch. The Patriots went 10-0-1 in their final 11 games this season, posting a 35-12 scoring edge over the final 11-game stretch.
Faith Christian lost twice this season in September, with defeats coming on Sept. 3 and Sept. 16, and did not drop another contest for the remainder of the campaign. The loss on Sept. 3 came against league rival Troy Bethany Christian (2-1). The Patriots closed the season on a four-game win streak.
Faith Christian learned from those heartbreaks finals losses in 2021 and 2022 to turn those close losses into close wins. This year’s seniors on the Patriots’ roster had played in four straight state title games.
Troy Bethany Christian did not win a game two years ago but made a grand turnaround in 2023 with still a young team to finish as the MACS Division I state runner-up. The Bruins came up on the short end of the stick for the second straight season and the third time since 2015.
Troy Bethany captured state titles in 1985, 2010 and 2014.
This year the Bruins finished 5-3-3 overall and outscored the opposition 25-13 with two shutouts and three shutouts against over 11 games. Troy Bethany Christian defeated Temperance State Line Christian 3-0 in the state semifinals.
