CANTON, Mich. – Wins have not necessarily been easy to come by for Canton over the last two seasons.
A plethora of tight games resulted in just a five-win season last year and this year although the Cobras have improved substantially, Canton still finished seventh in the KLAA-West Division this season.
The Cobras picked up a marquee win on Monday to reach the Division 1 district finals. Thanks to two late goals, Canton upset Division 1 ninth-ranked Plymouth, the KLAA-West runner-up, by a 2-0 count to advance to the district finals to face Salem. Plymouth had reached as high as No. 2 on the charts this season but never fell out of the top-15 with one of its best regular season efforts in years.
Zac Pavlik netted the eventual game-winner in the 68th minute to pace the Cobras, while with Plymouth pushing multiple players up to try to net an equalizer Nathan Gilmour scored the second goal in the 78th minute to seal the deal.
Senior Keegan Creedon notched the clean sheet for the Cobras, who improved to 10-10-1 overall. Canton has now won three straight games by a combined 14-2 advantage and are now 4-1-0 in its last five games with a 15-5 scoring edge in that span.
Canton, which finished just 5-11-3 last season, has turned the tides this year and now hold a 45-42 edge on the scoreboard this season. The shutout was the second straight and fourth of the season for the Cobras.
Canton lost to Plymouth twice inside KLAA-West Division play and another time back in the Balconi Invitational in mid-August. Not this time around, as the Cobras kept the Wildcats off the scoreboard to end their season prematurely.
Plymouth, which was ranked in the top 15 of the Division 1 polls all season, stalled out with a 12-3-5 overall record.
SALEM 2, LIVONIA CHURCHILL 2: Salem advanced to the district finals again this season with an explosive six-goal effort on Churchill.
Senior Marcel Jackson and sophomore and recent junior-varsity callup Sachiin Kumar scored two goals apiece to pace the Rocks (11-9-2). Seniors Bryan Baker and Anteneh Berhan also scored for Salem, which has now outscored its foes 52-28 this season despite graduating nine starters.
The Rocks offense has erupted in recent weeks, now capturing three straight wins with a 20-3 edge in that run.
Salem has reached the district finals for the fourth straight season and look to win their second district in three years when they battle upset-minded Canton (10-10-1) at 7 p.m. Wednesday at the PCS Soccer Stadium.
Churchill, which has enjoyed a little with bit of a resurgence in recent years, finishes with a 10-7-1 record, a fourth-place finish in the KLAA-East Division and an appearance in the district semifinals. The Chargers dropped two of their final three games where they were outscored 13-8.
Churchill still outscored its opposition 58-38 this season.
