NOTABLES/OUTLOOK/COACH’S QUOTE: Since Dave Muczynski stepped away in 2012 and building the Yellowjackets into a respectable state powerhouse in Division 2, Avondale’s program has been quite consistent with a revolving door of coaches over the past dozens years. In recent years have dwindled and so has the Yellowjackets’ win totals and success. Former Ortonville Brandon and Michigan State player Kathleen O’Shea enters to try to build back up the program and reestablish a level of respect. Avondale is coming off a six-win season in 2023 but remain in the OAA-Blue. The OAA splits into four divisions with the Blue Division and newly-created Gold Division being four schools each where each team plays each other twice. The program has increased numbers above 30 with a large freshmen class, which has allowed for a junior-varsity program for the first time since 2021. Avondale has started 0-3-2 but is setting the building blocks for a successful future even though the dividends might not be paid out this year.

SCHOOL: Ferndale-Ferndale University Unified

2023 OVERALL AND LEAGUE RECORD/ FINISH: 8-6-2, 3-2-0 OAA-Blue (tied-second)

D; Allison Stichler, fr.; Reina Camila Dela Cruz, jr.; Lucy Clark, soph. M; Ayla Craft, jr. M/F; Emerie Peters, jr. M; Abi Dutra, soph. KEY NEWCOMERS: Allison Sticher, fr. M; Meera Venugopal, fr. F

NOTABLES/OUTLOOK/COACH’S QUOTE: Based on its 8-0 victory over Avondale and 5-3 loss to West Bloomfield, it’s been a mixed bag for the Eagles in terms of league play results. The Eagles will benefit from playing better teams in the long run but where they’ll finish is anyone’s guess. This is still a team on the rise, as most of the roster is intact from a league runner-up finish in 2023.

SCHOOL: North Farmington

HEAD COACH: Erika Rust, 10th season

2023 OVERALL AND LEAGUE RECORD / FINISH: 4-13-0, 0-7-0 OAA White Division (eighth, no points)

2023 STATE TOURNAMENT RESULTS: Lost in D-1 pre-districts to Walled Lake Central (4-0)

RETURNING STARTERS: No list submitted.

OTHER KEY RETURNEES: No list submitted.

KEY NEWCOMERS: No list submitted.

PARTIAL ROSTER: Adrianna Bohannin, sr. D; Avani Srinivas, sr. M; Caitlyn McLane, sr. D; Elianna Kassab, jr. M/F; Maggie Greener, jr. M/F; Rachel Mateyak, sr. M; Skyler Wayne, jr. M; Vanessa Kantor, jr. D

NOTABLES/OUTLOOK/COACH’S QUOTE: North Farmington is coming off just a four-win season and finished last in the OAA White Division last year. It was everything a major rebuilding year encompasses. The Raiders started 0-9-0 and 1-11-0 and were outscored 67-21 on the season with just one shutout. The program was up in the OAA-Red just five years ago but has not enjoyed much success the last couple of years, going 4-13-0 in 2023, 8-6-2 in 2022 and just 2-8-1 in the covid-shortened 2021 campaign. Can North Farmington reverse the trend in 2024? The Raiders started off 1-1-0 and are now in the newly-revamped four-school OAA Blue Division to compete against schools in a similar position.

SCHOOL: West Bloomfield

HEAD COACH: Sam Makki, first season

2023 OVERALL AND LEAGUE RECORD / FINISH: 12-5-1, 5-0-0 OAA Blue Division

2023 STATE TOURNAMENT RESULTS: Def. Waterford Mott (3-1); lost in D-1 district semifinals to Walled Lake Northern (6-0)

RETURNING STARTERS: Alesha Tariq, sr. F; Parker Aulgur, sr. F; Carly Lyons, jr. F (All-League, All-District); Sydney Lalone, sr. D (All-League, All-District); Montse Rodriguez, sr. M/D; Evelyn Marshall, sr. M.

OTHER KEY RETURNEES: Ava Reisig, jr. D

KEY NEWCOMERS: Sarina Khatchadourian, soph. G; Tayln Rigney, fr. G; Natalie Rebtoy, fr. F; Isabella Andric, fr.; Lana Cheachirini, soph. M/F; Charlotte Kremer, soph.; Biana Palazzolo, fr.; Eva Zimnicki, fr. D/M; Alexandria Peratsakis, fr.

NOTABLES/OUTLOOK/COACH’S QUOTE: After finishing 2-15-1 in a major rebuilding year in 2022, the Lakers made a grand turnaround in 2023. West Bloomfield finished a respectable 12-5-1 and won its third league championship in a decade. Coach Jason Clark is now the head coach at his alma mater, Troy Athens, while veteran club coach Sam Makki takes over the reigns at WB, where there are six returning starters and a quality freshman class that could make an impact. The Lakers remain in the OAA-Blue after the league expanded into four divisions this spring. The Lakers could be a factor in a wide-open race again this season.
