PONTIAC, Mich. – The Carpathia Kickers proved that the game of soccer sometimes isn’t a mad sprint but a marathon on turf.
After falling behind 1-0 Sunday to the Detroit Bullets, the Kickers scored three consecutive goals to open up the second half and held on down the stretch for a 3-2 victory in the Michigan Soccer Association Gerhard Mengel Over-40 State Cup Tournament Finals at the United Wholesale Mortgage Sports Complex.
It took Capathia all 90 minutes plus stoppage time to eventually hold off the Bullets and claim the grand prize.
The Detroit Bullets took the 1-0 lead in the 17th minute when Eric Bowman volleyed in a cross from Scott Emert. The lead stood at the half despite the Bullets being outshot 7-3 in the first half.
Carpathia came surging back in the second half with goals in the 49th, 51st and 64th minutes and did not surrender the lead after that point.
Ryan Rzepka scored the game-tying goal for the Kickers off a slotted pass from Doug Rice in the 49th minute.
The Kickers gained the lead only two minutes later, as Rice set up Johnny Ginnetti with the breakaway tally in the 51st.
Rzepka scored again in the 64th minute off a penalty kick to give his team an all-important two-goal cushion.
The Bullets remained loaded and did not go down without a fight. Bowman corralled another pass from Emert, turned a fired a laser into the far post in the 71st minute to trim the deficit down to 3-2.
Carpathia outshot Detroit 8-7 in the second half and defensively held on down the stretch to be able to raise the trophy.
Chris Weiskirch made three saves for the Kickers to gain the win between the pipes. Carpathia outshot Detroit 15-10 overall, including 6-5 with shots on frame, and scored on three of the six shots on target in the contest.
Joel Sharpe registered three saves in goal for the Bullets, which held a 3-0 advantage on cornerkicks in the game.
