NOTABLES/OUTLOOK/COACH’S QUOTE: With the Maldonado sisters roaming the pitch and a strong backline, the Jaguars hope to move up furth in the Downriver League standings and perhaps advance further in the state tourney. Last year Allen Park outscored its opposition 54-40 with seven shutouts but were blanked five times on their schedule. So far this season they are 2-4-1 but have been outscored 24-18, so improvements will have to be made for the Jaguars to improve over last season. … “We are (projected as) a mid-pack team with two very talented sisters – Isabelle and Sophia Maldonado with an intact returning backline. If we can minimize our backline mistakes we can start challenging the area’s better teams. Last year our goal was not to get mercied by the better teams and we were able to achieve that goal with our best loss 1-0 against (league champion) Trenton. Our goal this year is to get better than last year and be competitive in every game and make some noise in league and state playoffs,” said Scott Fowler.
SCHOOL: Dearborn Edsel Ford
HEAD COACH: Mohamad Saad
2023 OVERALL AND LEAGUE RECORD / FINISH: 13-6-1, 7-3-0 Downriver League (third)
2023 STATE TOURNAMENT RESULTS: Def. Wyandotte Roosevelt (5-0); def. Temperance-Bedford (2-1); lost in D-1 district finals to Woodhaven (2-0)

NOTABLES/OUTLOOK/COACH’S QUOTE: Last year Edsel Ford finished third in the Downriver League. The Thunderbirds outscored the opposition 61-34 with six shutouts and were shut out five times. So far this season Edsel Ford is off to a respectable 3-1-0 start through April 15, posting two clean sheets with a 24-3 scoring edge.
SCHOOL: Gibraltar Carlson
HEAD COACH: Steven Briggs
2023 OVERALL AND LEAGUE RECORD / FINISH: 7-8-4, 5-3-1 Downriver League (fourth)
2023 STATE TOURNAMENT RESULTS: Def. Carleton Airport (8-0); lost in D-2 district semifinals to Trenton (2-1)
RETURNING STARTERS: Kylie Iwasko, jr. D/M; Isabella Sgro, jr. D (All-State Honorable Mention); Katie Frommann, jr. G; Anika Irwin, sr. F; Maya Genzel, soph. M
OTHER KEY RETURNEES: Alyvia Roll, jr. M; Lillian Raines, jr. F; Morgan Ross, jr. D; Gianna Majeske, soph. D; Kassidy Sugarbaker, jr. M; Dreya Waple, sr. M; Ella Atkinson, soph. M.
KEY NEWCOMERS: Kylie Brown, sr. M; Josi Farago, fr. F; Natalie MacBride, fr. M; Noelle Lefko, soph. M; Allison Gresham, soph. M.
NOTABLES/OUTLOOK/COACH’S QUOTE: Last year saw the Marauders finish fourth out of nine schools in the Downriver League. Gibraltar Carlson outscored its opposition 44-030 with six shutouts and were blanked seven times. This year with a young team the Marauders have been outscored 20-9 during a slow 1-3-1 start. … “Carlson is in a phase of small rebuild in 2024 as many top scorers and key defenders graduated in 2023. Plenty of talent but not worked together so it will take time to build cohesive team but we have goals to be in the top portion of our league by end of season,” said coach Steve Briggs.
SCHOOL: Lincoln Park
HEAD COACH: Danielle Evans
2023 OVERALL AND LEAGUE RECORD / FINISH: 4-9-2, 2-7-2 Downriver League (eighth)
2023 STATE TOURNAMENT RESULTS: Lost in D-1 pre-districts to Trenton (8-0)
RETURNING STARTERS: No players specified.
OTHER KEY RETURNEES: No players specified.
KEY NEWCOMERS: No players specified.
ROSTER: No list submitted.
NOTABLES/OUTLOOK/COACH’S QUOTE: After being outscored 62-24 with only two shutouts and being shut out seven times, the Railsplitters are looking for wholesale improvements in 2024.
SCHOOL: Southgate Anderson
HEAD COACH: Tori Singstock
2023 OVERALL AND LEAGUE RECORD / FINISH: 1-17-1, 0-9-0 Downriver League (ninth)
2023 STATE TOURNAMENT RESULTS: Lost in D-2 pre-districts to New Boston Huron (8-0)
RETURNING STARTERS: Marina Borg, jr. M
OTHER KEY RETURNEES: Olivia Baba, soph.; Alexa Barron-Vargas, jr.; Melody Carr, jr.; Abril Castrillon, soph.; Madalynne Garner, jr.; Rachel Gawenda, jr.; Marina Georvassilis, soph.; Josephine Hernandez, sr.; Sasha Infante, sr.; Ayanna Jones, soph.; Megan Knott, sr.; Destiny Oskarik, sr.; Lauren Sanchez, jr.; Hope Schuck, soph.; Hayden Thomas, sr.; Skylar Tunstall, soph.;
KEY NEWCOMERS: Kyleigh Williams, fr.; Amelia Loshi, fr.; Julianne Nadolski, fr.
NOTABLES/OUTLOOK/COACH’S QUOTE: The bad news is that Southgate ventured through a major rebuilding campaign in 2023, scoring only 11 goals and finishing with just one win – a 6-1 non-conference victory over Melvindale. The team was shut out 14 times last year. The good news is that the bulk of the team is back and much improved, so reversing last year’s trend is possible. Coach Singstock did play in college at Indiana Tech and should be able to turn the ship around to field a much more competitive side.
SCHOOL: Taylor
HEAD COACH: Becky Ansell
2023 OVERALL AND LEAGUE RECORD / FINISH: 3-10-1, 3-6-1 Downriver League (seventh)
2023 STATE TOURNAMENT RESULTS: Lost in D-1 pre-districts to Temperance Bedford (8-0)
RETURNING STARTERS: No players specified.
OTHER KEY RETURNEES: No players specified.
KEY NEWCOMERS: No players specified.
ROSTER: No list submitted.
NOTABLES/OUTLOOK/COACH’S QUOTE: Much like league rivals Southgate Anderson and Lincoln Park, any type of improvement is welcomed. Taylor was outscored 66-28 last season with one clean sheet but shut out seven times. That included only three wins. That’s the barometer for the Griffins, who have already played four of the top teams in the Downriver League and look for better fortunes later in the campaign. Taylor has been outscored 34-2 this season with one shutout, so the team is looking for a goal scorer and ways to shore up its backline.
SCHOOL: Trenton
HEAD COACH: Michael Hatfield
2023 OVERALL AND LEAGUE RECORD / FINISH: 15-3-2, 9-0-0 Downriver League (first; also won conference tournament)
2023 STATE TOURNAMENT RESULTS: Def. Gibraltar Carlson (2-1); def. Riverview (2-1, district finals); def. Dearborn Divine Child (4-1, regional semifinals); lost in D-2 regional finals to Grosse Pointe North (1-0)
RETURNING STARTERS: Claire Gonyea, sr. F/M (All-State First Team; signed with NCAA Division I Eastern Michigan); Leila Gorno, sr. G (All-State Honorable Mention); Chloe Wishart, jr. M/F (All-District); Kate Haveman, jr. F (All-State Honorable Mention); Miya Severino, sr. D (All-district); Kira Johnson, sr. M (All-District); Lilly Mulford, jr. D (All-District); Julia Mach, soph. M (All-District); Audrey Gerou, soph. D
OTHER KEY RETURNEES: Avery Schultz, jr. M; Alyssa Berger, jr. M/F
KEY NEWCOMERS: Elle Dolson, fr. D; Maddie Reamer, fr. M/F
NOTABLES/OUTLOOK/COACH’S QUOTE: Trenton outscored the opposition 58-11 with 11 shutouts last season, spending some time in the Division 2 Top-15 rankings and for good reason. The Trojans captured the Downriver League regular season and tournament titles, won a district championship and advanced all the way to the Division 2 regional finals before being upended by eventual state champion Grosse Pointe North (1-0). The bad news for Downriver area schools is the Trojans welcome back nine starters and 11 total players and this team is primed to contend for championships along the way. Can this team reach the Final Four? Trenton is 5-2-0 overall this season and both losses came via shootout in the Marshall Sportsfest April 13 (2-1 losses to DeWitt and Marshall). The Trojans have taken care of business elsewhere, outscoring the opposition 28-4 with five shutouts already this season.
SCHOOL: Woodhaven
HEAD COACH: Tyler McManus
2023 OVERALL AND LEAGUE RECORD/ FINISH: 9-10-2, 7-2-1 Downriver League (second)
2023 STATE TOURNAMENT RESULTS: Def. Monroe (2-1); def. Dearborn Edsel Ford (2-0); lost in D-1 regional semi finals to Saline (6-0)
RETURNING STARTERS: Rylie DeBacker, jr. M; Gabrielle Czopek, sr. M/F; Lauren Guertin, sr. M (All-League, All-District); Katherine Carmack, sr. M; Lauren Guertin, sr. M
OTHER KEY RETURNEES: Olivia Alissawi, soph. F; Harper Barnhart, soph. M; Isabella Cruz, sr. M; Ellie Greer, soph. D; Shayla Drzewiecki, soph. D; Jaelynn Hoenicke, sr. M; Adrianna June, jr. D; Ava Mueller, jr. F; Keira Shallow, jr. M; Anastasia Slebodnik, jr. M; Elizabeth Wood, soph. D; Sarah Weimer, sr. M
KEY NEWCOMERS: Isabella Smith, fr.; Jade Beane, sr.; Olivia Heiple, soph.; Maria Molinaro, soph.; Giovanna Vellejo, sr.
NOTABLES/OUTLOOK/COACH’S QUOTE: What began as a rebuilding season with a sub-five-hundred record, the Warriors still found a way to finish second in the overall Downriver League standings and win a Division 1 district championship.
SCHOOL: Wyandotte Roosevelt
HEAD COACH: Kirsten Chambers-Loselle
2023 OVERALL AND LEAGUE RECORD / FINISH: 8-10-2, 2-6-2 Downriver League (sixth)
2023 STATE TOURNAMENT RESULTS: Lost in D-1 pre-districts to Dearborn Edsel Ford (5-0)
RETURNING STARTERS: Bianca Hawthorne, sr. G (All-League, All-District, All-Area); Amelia Grenz, jr. D/M (All-District Honorable Mention)
NOTABLES/OUTLOOK/COACH’S QUOTE: While the Bears must replace a lot of their lineup from last season, they do have one of the top goalkeepers in that region of the state in Bianca Hawthorne who will keep Wyandotte in games as some of the younger players develop. Playing all downriver area schools from the Downriver League, Western Wayne Athletic Conference and Huron League, Wyandotte is 3-4-0 overall on the season. The Bears have claimed two clean sheets and outscored the opposition 17-8. Wyandotte has also posted some close results, losing only to Woodhaven (1-0), Flat Rock (1-0), Carleton Airport (3-2) and Garden City (2-0). In comparison Wyandotte outscored the opposition 51-42 last season with four shutouts and being blanked seven times. The Bers are shooting for even better numbers in 2024.
