2023 OVERALL AND LEAGUE RECORD / FINISH: First-year program.

2023 STATE TOURNAMENT RESULTS: First-year program.

PROJECTED STARTERS: No players specified.

OTHER KEY PLAYERS: No players specified.

NOTABLES/OUTLOOK/COACH’S QUOTE: This is the inaugural season for the Tigers, who started the campaign 1-3-0 through April 18. Although Academy of the Americas have been outscored 18-1 thus far, as sometimes expected of a fledging program, the program does have a 1-0 victory over Dearborn Henry Ford Academy.

SCHOOL: Detroit Cass Tech

HEAD COACH: Phillip Jack

2023 OVERALL AND LEAGUE RECORD / FINISH: 14-3-0, 4-0-0 (first in regular season; second in conference tournament; lost to Detroit Western 6-5 in a shootout in the DPSL tournament finals)

2023 STATE TOURNAMENT RESULTS:  Lost in D-1 pre-districts to Dearborn Heights Crestwood (3-0)

RETURNING STARTERS: Alicen ‘Apple’ Elder, soph. F (38 goals, 17 assists last season); Zoe Haynes, soph. M/F (12 goals, seven assists); Autumn Larry, sr. G (1.10 goals-against-average); MaKayla Galloway, soph. F; Kayla Guerrero, sr. M (12 goals); Victoria Espinoza, jr. M (six goals, six assists).

OTHER KEY RETURNEES: Nya Williams, soph. D; Analise Diaz, soph.; Africa Roman, sr. D; Olivia Thompson, sr. D; Michelle Carpio, sr.; Karley Brazill, sr.; Shinha Chanda, jr.; Macayla Ramsey, jr.; Autumn Larry, sr. G; Layla Pedroza, jr.; Evelyn Rodriguez, sr.; Selena Alegria, soph.

KEY NEWCOMERS: No players specified.

ROSTER: No list submitted, and no list located on school’s athletics website or on any outside source. Above-listed names came from a 2023 roster posted on MaxPreps.

NOTABLES/OUTLOOK/COACH’S QUOTE: The Technicians are simply coming off their best season in program history. Cass Tech won 14 games, captured the regular season DPSL title, reached the league tournament finals, and outscored the opposition 95-16 with the goals scored a new school record. The Technicians also recorded a school-best 10 shutouts. Although Cass Tech could not advance out of its district, this was supposed to be a year to build upon last year’s success. Graduation, injuries and defections to ECNL and Girls Academy club soccer hurt this team, which is off to a 0-4-0 start through April 18 and outscored 22-4.

SCHOOL: Detroit Crockett Midtown Science and Medicine

HEAD COACH: Anna Green, first season.

2023 OVERALL AND LEAGUE RECORD / FINISH: First-year program.

2023 STATE TOURNAMENT RESULTS: First-year program.

NOTABLES/OUTLOOK/COACH’S QUOTE: Although the school attempted to begin its girls soccer program this year, there was not enough players to field a team this year. The school will again attempt a boys soccer team in the fall and again revisit adding a girls soccer program in 2025.

SCHOOL: Detroit Renaissance

HEAD COACH: Nathan Jackson

2023 OVERALL AND LEAGUE RECORD / FINISH: 5-5-0, 0-4-0 Detroit Public School League (third)

2023 STATE TOURNAMENT RESULTS: Lost in D-2 pre-districts to Walled Lake Western (8-0)

RETURNING STARTERS: No players specified.

OTHER KEY RETURNEES: No players specified.

KEY NEWCOMERS: No players specified.

ROSTER: No list submitted, and no list located on school’s athletics website or on any outside source.

NOTABLES/OUTLOOK/COACH’S QUOTE: Last year Renaissance finished behind Cass Tech and Western in the PSL but will have company in the league with the arrival of Detroit Academy of the Americas. Detroit Crockett Midtown Science and Medicine attempted to add girls soccer this year but didn’t have enough interested athletes, and Detroit Mumford continued its program before the 2018 season. The Phoenix recorded five wins last season and were outscored 32-27 with four shutouts but were blanked five times. It appears that Renaissance has improved significantly since last season and is off to one of its best starts in program history. Through April 18, the Phoenix are 3-1-0 overall, just two wins shy of last season’s total, have posted one shutout and outscored the opposition 16-3.

SCHOOL: Detroit Western

HEAD COACH: Brad Dewar

2023 OVERALL AND LEAGUE RECORD / FINISH: 7-6-1, 2-1-1 Detroit Public School League (finished second in the regular season; won the DPSL tournament with a 6-5 shootout win over Detroit Cass Tech).

2023 STATE TOURNAMENT RESULTS: Lost in D-1 pre-districts to Grosse Pointe South (9-0)

RETURNING STARTERS: Evelyn Oliveras, sr. F; Rosana Tellez, jr. M/D; no other players specified.

OTHER KEY RETURNEES: No players specified.

KEY NEWCOMERS: No players specified.

ROSTER: No list submitted, and no list located on school’s athletics website or on any outside source.

NOTABLES/OUTLOOK/COACH’S QUOTE: Western progressed throughout last season and posted a fine result in the Detroit Public School League finals with a 6-5 shootout win over Detroit Cass Tech. The Cowgirls outscored the opposition 57-35 over 14 games and posted four shutouts while being blanked three times. Through April 18 this season, Detroit Western is 4-1-1 with a 25-8 scoring edge and two shutouts. The Cowgirls also defeated Cass Tech 3-2 on April 16 in their DPSL opener.
